Break-in done in one weekend

I've mentioned before that I work from home, so I don't actually drive many miles. I've also mentioned that I plan to take my car to a track event at the end of the month. The track event meant that I needed at least 1,200 miles on the car by the end of the month, and my working situation meant that I wasn't going to get there via my daily routine, so there was only one solution... road trip!

Friday afternoon me and my wife jumped in the car and headed over to Napa Valley, CA we spent Friday night and all day Saturday there doing wine tastings, riding the wine train, etc... Sunday afternoon we headed down the coast via Hwy 1, which is one of the windiest, and most beautiful, roads I've ever driven on. Next stop was San Semion, home of the Hearst Castle. We were too late for tours that day so we hunkered down in a hotel room and woke up early the next morning. We did a 2 hour tour of the Hearst Castle, which was cool, then shot over to the Sequoia national forest, where I drove on the single windiest road I've ever been on. (so bad it was 10Mph a good portion of the way up) When we got to the top we stopped at the museum and then hiked down to see General Sherman. We then headed out of the park via the opposite entrance and then back north. We stayed the night in Lodi a little town in central CA and then headed over to Fairfield, CA where we took a cool tour of the Jelly Belly candy factory. After a couple of hours there we headed home.

When I pulled into the garage my car had 1,198 miles on it (had only 10 on Wednesday when I picked it up) so my break in was complete.

A couple of small gripes about the car I discovered while on the trip...

1) The seats are not very comfortable for long periods of time. The thigh bolsters caught the seam of the pockets of my jeans and caused some pain after a while. And in general they're just hard on your butt.

2) The navigation ladies voice is not loud enough. And when you have "speed volume" enabled she does not lower the stereo volume when announcing a direction. Even with "speed volume" disabled the commands were barely audible, and I have pretty good hearing.

Other then that the car was great. I averaged about 22mpg, which was good because in some parts of CA premium was close to $5/gallon. The speed was nice, and more then enough for me to blast around anyone when passing on two lane roads.

I plan to almost reach break in within the weekend. Hopefully hit it by the time the weekend is over.

Just adjust the volume when the Nav lady is speaking, to turn the volume up. Hmmm that sounds weird, what I mean as she is saying "in 800 meters turn left" you just need to turn the volume up on the steering wheel or radio knob, same as bluetooth.

Maybe it's just the volume difference between my iPod and the nav system causing the issue. Because if I did what you were saying, then when the iPod came back I would get blasted by extremely loud music.

Ahhh like volume difference between certain stations on tv. Show is loud, then commercial comes on and you're just like wtf :eyebulge:.

I think when changing the volume of the Nav, you are doing it independently of the volume of the radio, even though it's using the same knob.

YEP....Krookid had it correct
You have to adjust the NAV lady's volume while she is speaking.

Is there any way to get her to speak so I can adjust the volume outside of the brief moment she's telling me to do something?

The only way I know is to turn off voice instructions, and turn it right back on.

This is the way to do it! Sounds like a great road trip. And you must have a great wife to take such a driving-intensive journey with you!

I put 2268 miles on my 1 in about 10 days of driving in Europe. I actually found the seats comfortable for long hauls, but understand the subjective nature of this sort of assessment.

+1 on the seats. Wearing baseball caps backwards (better field of view) for long periods of time is a back killer.

I've been wanting to take a drive up to Wine Country. Only about 30 minutes away, I really have no excuse not to. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend! Thanks.

P.S. I'm sorry you had to stay the night in Lodi.

Actually the Holiday Inn Express we stayed at in Lodi was considerably nicer then the Best Western we stayed at in Napa and it was half the price. We also ate at a really good breakfast place called the Omelet House in the morning and I had the best omelet I've ever had in my life. So all in all the stay in Lodi was positive.

I used to have one of the buttons programmed to repeat last voice command... That will work too.

Isn't there a separate AUX volumn control? There is on the non-iDrive audio and I had to use it to set the iPod volumn to compare to radio and CD volumn. Maybe try adjusting that Dan, see if it helps.
