Transmission stuck in neutral

I have an automatic , and Ive been having to fiddle the gear selector so the car senses parking to remove the key. Its happened 3 times this month, and today I cannot get the car into parking or any other gear, it stays in neutral even though the shifter goes through all the positions, but the cluster only indicates neutral and the transmission is really in neutral.
Any ideas on how to engage a gear so I dont have to tow the car to a shop??

Car start fine, transmission never slipped or made noise. Cluster does not show Transmission problem icon, just the N, and a car with arrows front and back to warn that it can move from being in neutral.

sounds like a linkage problem. could be as simple as a loose pin. have to have the car of a lift to see it though.

tHe car shouldnt start outside of park. Maybe a wire got crossed in your computer?

You could try a hard reset. Pull the battery and then see if the issue resolves itself.

Possibly a shift solenoid. This happened on my Nissan.

The car can start in Neutral, doesn't have to be in Park

Problem solved,
Removed boot and saw linkage and cable move correctly, then got the car up and checked bottom.
A screw on the transmission to cable mount came off (was still in underpan).
Took a few tries to align gear selector with transmission so they both indicated the same gear but got it done.
Huge scare (if it was mecatronics) turned out to be simple fix.
Fixed and running great.....
Thanks guys
