Let's remove/install the Kidney Grills

Tools Required
T-30 Torx Driver
Right Angle Tool
Flashlight
Flat Blade Screwdriver

Removing the Kidney Grills

With the hood open, begin by removing the 4 T-30 Screws above the kidney grills and set them aside.

You will also want to lift the strip of insulation at the front of the hood off of it’s sleeve. You remove it by pulling up.

The Kidney Grills are held in with 6 clips. There are three along the top edge, one along the side toward the light and two along the bottom. If you are replacing the Kidney Grills, look at the new Grills: you will see the locations of the clips. To remove the kidney grills, you need to lift the two clips along the bottom of the grills. The easiest way to do this is with a right angle tool. They are available from Sears and are a handy tool to have. Sears part number: 00999802000 ($12.99). Sears carries a few different varieties.

You will want to begin by undocking the two lower clips. You will be able to see them in between the slats in the grill. You may need a flashlight to help you locate them. Once you have located them, insert the right angle tool to lift the center section of the clip and lift up. You will want to use your free hand to gently pull the grill toward you. You will want to prevent the grill from re-docking itself so once you have one side unclipped, keep enough pressure outward so it does not go back in.

With the lower clips undocked, you can begin working on the upper clips. In order to access the clips, you want to pull up on the bumper trim and if you look in from the engine compartment, you will see the three clips. Use a flat blade screwdriver or the pointed end of the pick to push the clips down.

As you did with the lower clips, gently pull the grill toward you to keep the clips from re-engaging. Once you have the 3 upper clips undocked, you can pull the grills out.

Installing the new Kidney Grills

To install the new grills, simply line them up and push them in until you hear the clips engage. Once you have both grills installed, replace the 4 T-30 Screws and tighten them down. Re-install the strip of insulation.

If you follow this DIY , please post a thank you.

Thanks for the DIY. I was wondering what "right-angled tools" everyone was using.

Thank you very much for this DIY. Today, I ordered a set of 128 nostrils/kidneys, I see the black grill bars as far more attractive on a black car than the stock 135 item which has chrome grill bars.

I did this on my Montego 135. The shadowline/tii grills were too black and the 135 grills were too chrome. I like the 128 grills quite a bit better than either.

I think the chrome grills look much better. The shadow grills almost look like nothing is there. IMO IMO IMO:wink:

Just curious about the 128s...are they still chrome trimmed? I have a 135 BSM (obvious by my sig sorry lol) on order...and am looking for "the look"......just afraid the shadowline might be TOO dark for the sapphire metallic. Thanks for any info/opinions anyone has!

128 kidneys have the chrome surround with black grill bars, as my 135 is JB, I thought the 128 kidneys would be more aesthetically pleasing, it plain looks better without chrome grill bars, at least, to me, plus, it's my car. Ha, ha...

Same here. :w00t:

I lasted 1 day with the shadowline and they were too black for me.

I will look and see if I have a pic from the same angle with the 135 grills.

what color do you have Andy? I have a BSM on order and am afraid the Shadowline will be TOO dark for that shade of black. Do you guys order the 128s from the dealer or somewhere else? Thanks!

duh...guessing that is YOUR montego in the pics? if so...sorry for the dumb question haha

Yeah, my car is Montego, no worries .

I liked the shadowline grills when they were installed until I saw the car from across a parking lot. It looked like someone forgot to put them in. I thought the 135 grills were too much chrome for a car with no chrome on it so the 128 grills were the way to go.

Tischer is probably your best bet for the 128 grills. The 128 and 135 grills are much cheaper than the shadowline ones. You pay for the white box with “BMW Performance” printed on it.

Just playin around...I switched mine yestersday to the Shadowline perimeter with the OEM chrome tipped interior slats.
It presents a nice combination....not a completely "blacked-out" look and eliminates the big chrome frame.

Very cool! I got my shadowline grill at home with the car still on the way. I might have to take your idea and interchange the grills to look like that. Next you have to put the chrome lip and black grill. Change it up every month to mess with people:-P Its good to know you can switch the grills easily. Thanks AndyM for the DIY and TP 135i for the pics!
