Small problem, need advice

So i rubbed on my fender liner pretty bad the other day and my fender seems to have carved a line into the sidewall of my tire, and would like to know if this would be a concern on the track. The tire only has a few thousand miles on it.

I am going to Thunderbolt with NASA next weekend and have time to replace the tire if I need to, just wanted to get some opinions first.

Thanks in advance!

You may be ok on the street, but what is going to keep this from continuing to cut into the tire from hard cornering on the track. Pull the fender? Add more camber?

I fixed the bottoming out issue and I will be getting an alignment so I am positive the fender won't be touching the tire again...I just want to know if the tire will be able to hold up at the track and won't fail on me because of that, no chords or metal wires are showing and it dug in about 3, 4mm.

Tire is only has a couple thousand miles on it and I would hate to have to throw it out if I don't have to.

As an instructor for NASA, I would be concerned when seeing that during my tech inspection of your car. A little rub is no big deal, I have some of that on my tires, but yours is cut deep enough to be able to pull a layer of rubber back.

Street use, sure. Track, not worth the risk. Buy a new tire and keep that one as a spare.

I would be more concerned with how far out your wheel is from the fender. It appears you have serious fitment issues.

NASA Northeast tech is really anal, more so than other chapters/organizations. I've seen them send guys home from the Glen because their roll bars were at the wrong angle. Guy drove back 5 hours with no refund.

1) For street should be fine
2) For NJMP, I've seen guys drive on worse but replacing tire is best bet. I would keep that as a spare
3) For NASA Northeast, you may not even pass morning tech

+1, maybe it's just the angle but in your pics looks like wheel sticks out a good 1.5". Being that far away from the hub would worry me.

I'll echo this as well. I was shocked how long and strict the tech process was when at NJMP earlier this year with NASA NE. I'm all for being safe and thorough but that was absurd. They even had a "belt specialist" that had to come check our 6 point harness installation prior to passing tech.

The shop i went to get the m3 subframe, m3 diff, halfshafts, etc put it, installed 15mm spacers in the rear when I did not need them and did not tell me about it either. I know it looks like its sticking out far but its only sticking out about 1/4". I will be getting rid of the spacers and adding neg camber to tuck the rear in so I do not have this problem again.

Doesn't matter if no cords are showing, IMO. That part of the tire takes the highest load and sees significant lateral force. Force that will continue to take that small tear and make it BIGGER.

Even moderate lateral forces will make the tear bigger. That tire is toast. Wouldn't touch it with a 1,000ft pole.

I was thinking the same thing, will be getting a new tire, thanks for the advice.

+1 to this.

My car has a 2014 NASA Annual Tech sticker on it (and a logbook in the glovebox) and it was a massive cluster**** when I went to NJMP with NASA-NE. First, they said the annual tech was OK (it's got one because I TT the car) for HPDE sessions that I had signed up for. Then I get on grid and they say no. I go back to registration, they ask the tech shed, and their guys are like "well we should proooobably take a look at it."

That experience, combined with the attitude of several officals, some policies that cost me track time, and that track time being supremely expensive, means I'll probably never run with NASA-NE again.

To the OP - replace the tire. Sorry for the derailing!
