Dinan Stage 2 Boost readings and install verification

Hey folks,

So I am suspecting my flash may have gotten overwritten when the car went in for service.

Feels different in a variety of ways, mainly throttle response, and pull on WOT.

Orrrr maybe I've just gotten used to the car and need to go Stage 3?


Anyways before I go into the dealer and raise a stink I got Dashcommand to check the boost against my butt dyno.

No matter how hard I beat on the car I cant get the boost to go past 10psi.

Not really able to safely or legally go WOT on any roads around here in 4th gear up to redline, and even in 3rd its kinda tough.

But WOT under a variety of engine loads on a cold dense day is getting nothing over 10. Hits right around 10 on the dial and stops flat.

I understand this may not be the best way for me gauge boost, but it's all I have. Also if Dashcommand is not accurate, it would be pretty unusual that it happens to be off by exactly what the stock boost is limited to.

Sooo anyone on here with Dinan Stage 2 on a N55 have any further insight or suggestions? Maybe someone with Dashcommand that can tell me what kind of max boost they are seeing?


I spoke with Dinan today and got the info on how to confirm the flash is on the car when I take it in.

I had a slightly difficult time finding that info so I will post that in separate thread for future searchers.

I just did a quick search, found the following thread. Looks like you should be seeing ~14 according to info there, but I see you got slightly lower numbers directly from Dinan according to your other post, so, meh, whatever

yes I read that post too, they eventually settled in at 13psi, which is pretty much apples for apples from what Dinan told me.
if i could get even a little over 10 on my pulls I wouldn't really be sweating it at all.

I understand it's not a particularly accurate comparison, but doing logs on my previous wrx @ stage 3 I could still get pretty close to peak boost readings in a few gears before redline.

right now it's brick walled at 10 no matter what I do.



btw looks like our car households are a twins...wifey drives the x1 too.

Just got off the phone with the Performance Parts dept of the dealer.

Interesting claims from them.

According to them any boost measured off the OBII will be inaccurate.

I am told that the way the tune works is that the flash tricks the DME into thinking it is underboosting, thus allowing it to over boost to reach 13psi.

Anyone heard of this before?

Seems feasible, but a bit odd. I assumed the flash would overwrite all of those values and restrictions to allow it to do whatever it wants to for the tune.

Also they said the tune can get wiped with ANY reprogramming!

"The only reason the Dinan software would ever be deleted is if the vehicle was programmed for any reason. Even replacing a battery would result in a programming which would wipe out the tune."

That, if true, seems CRAZY!!

Alright, so I'm still a noob here, but, nope, that don't sound kosher.

Things like the JB4 will intercept and change or replace data presented to the DME. Flash tuning, and the real benefit of flash tuning, is to change the map itself, to change the specific targets. Effectively the JB4 lies to the DME reporting lower than actual values where a flash tune simply increases the requested targets (and all the things associated, like fuel or timing).

Then again, cause I'm new, I'm assuming that the Dinan is a true flash map like Cobb or MHD, so maybe this will be a learning experience for me.... If it's not then Dinan will lose much respectability with me...

@1and1 I agree totally.
It seems like he is confusing the flash for a piggy back.

And Dinan just confirmed this for me.


The OBD2 readings will report accurate readings after the flash.

They also clarified that a battery coding will technically not erase your flash because they can specify the specific subsystem they are coding, sometimes they just flash the entire thing because it is easier and quicker, thus wiping your flash.

So it maybe a good idea to confirm your flash is still intact after any kind of dealer coding visit.
