My car overheated!!!!

Just got my car back from the dealership on Saturday! They reconnected a boot coming from the intercooler to the turbocharger that had become dislodged and was throwing the car into limp mode. Well.... today on my way home from work the car hesitated a bit and then the Big RED thermostat icon came up on the screen telling me my engine was overheated and to pull over immediately!! WTF!!! Zero to overheat with no warning signs??!!! I pulled over immediately and shut the car off for approximately 5 minutes, just enough time to let it cool down before getting off the roadway. luckily I was right next to a pull out where I turned the car off and called for a tow.........What could be the issue now?? I just find it coincedental that 4 days after the dealership has it this happens??? Maybe one thing has nothing to do with the other but come on now!!! Fuel pump replaced two weeks ago, then the intercooler thing, now this????

Sounds like your water pump IMO, check that out to see if it's working (via Rest function) and listen for the pump. Engine must be warm though I think.

I can't see why a disconnected inlet pipe would cause an overheat. If anything it would just suck in warm air from the engine compartment or hurt boost pressure. Unless you were going WOT or say bumper to bumper on a really warm day I can't see the intercooler piping impacting engine temps by anything the cooling system wouldn't be able to easily handle. Check for a coolant leak as well, maybe they caused a pipe to come loose.

Yup! it was the water pump!!! just got the call this morning!

My SA told me that it was the water pump but they had it in stock and this new one came with a lifetime warranty in case it ever happens again all I would be out was the labor to install it......I'll get my car back this evening. He promised.

Update us on the "Lifetime Warranty" on the WP.

Mine was also done at the dealer in 11/2013 and it came with the standard 24 months/unlimited mileage warranty. This is the typical warranty for all dealer installed parts. pls explain. Maybe you misunderstood him. thx

Aren't all dealers obligated by BMW to play by the same rules as it relates to parts warranties....?

Ouch, thats steep considering they can go out well before the 100k mile mark (mine went out at 40k) What mileage are you at?

Maybe they mean the pump's lifetime, when it dies the warranty is done

All BMW parts(and dealer repairs!) have a 24 months/unlimited mileage warranty. No such thing as a Lifetime warranty. Not even the HPFP have THAT!

87,500 miles

Maybe they mean the pump's lifetime, when it dies the warranty is done

Asked my SA again when I picked up my car and he said "The new water pump has a lifetime warranty" The labor is also covered if something happens to it within 24 months, after that I am liable for any labor charges to replace the part but the water pump would be replaced for free! no charge!" I'll take him at his word. He's been great to me so far!

That does not sound right to me. As Dackelone said, 24 months would be it. They are saying they will give you a free pump but only pay labour? I would ask them how much 'labour' would be. $1,000?

Lol!!! I'm not sure...I specifically asked the SA about BMW parts only having a 24 month warranty and he assured me that this water pump came with a lifetime warranty? I don't know what else to tell you guys? I really hope I don't have to worry about it again but it's nice to know that they will replace it.

The waterpumps on these cars are a joke and it's completely outrageous BMW isn't covering them under 100k miles. 40k miles, what a crock of bullshit.

What is it with BMW car cooling systems? It's a continual nightmare from one year to the next. It's so bad that "cooling kits" are offered by several after market parts dealers to just replace EVERYTHING in the cooling system to be safe. Are you kidding me? Talk about Achilles heel.

I'd ask to see where the warranty is found in writing. SA can tell you that and then you go to claim it when it fails next in however many miles and the dealer stiffs you with another $1200.
