Tech said that when they were doing spark plugs they could "snake" in there and peak. Also were trying to diagnose a crappy idle from time to time so that could be part of their curiosity.

My dealer did a walnut blasting for me as a courtesy since my warranty was coming up. They only blasted the intake and not the manifold however.

I gave the shop foreman and service advisor gifts throughout my service period.

Kind of interesting that we all drive cars that need a Hycolonic every 40k.

Having this done at a local indy shop for $500. I told them to replace the plugs and coil packs while the manifold is removed anyway. My last blast was at 45K. This one will be at 90K.

I'm assuming this is a 135i only for the most part thing to be done since I see you all own them....I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge

Yes, it's a 135i thing. Not sure if the 128i has direct injection. If it does then they need the blast as well, but I doubt they do.

This affects the N54 motor due to the fact of being direct injection. This also includes the 335i and 535i since BMW used the N54 across those platforms as well. Based on some of the cars I've walnut blasted, I would suggest it every 30-40k.

... and N55, and every other direct injection engine from other manufacturers...

Turbo and high output engines are probably worse due to increased blow-by.

Are there any over the counter products out there that can prevent or extend the interval needed to walnut blast?
I use Lubro Moly Jectron injection cleaner once a month and the ventil sauber valve clean at the same time. I know the valve clean is really not getting to the vavles due to direct injection, but I put it in anyway.
Or perhaps just always use top tier gasoline. Problem with that is Shell etc. is 50 cents a gallon more that the other brands..

Combustion gas that slips by the piston rings into the crank case. The piston to cylinder wall is not a perfect seal so it is just a fact of internal combustion engines.

This gas pressurizes the crank case which is why engines have have crank case vents--to evacuate the crank case so it doesn't build up which would have various negative consequences.

Higher torque per liter engines (i.e. turbos) are likely to have more blow-by for various reasons, increasing how much oily blow-by has to be vented, which ends up as the carbon build up on direct injection engines.

To answer your question simply, the answer is no. There's no fluid or cleaner you can put into your tank to clean the valves. The injectors spray directly in the cylinder bypassing the valves therefore no cleaner gets to the valves. Only way to clean it is to walnut blast. The difference is very noticeable, gives you much better throttle response. I have a journal thread under maintenance with before and after videos, check it out if you wanna see them.

I've been wanting to have this done for a while myself... My 135i hit 87k and popped a one time cylinder 3 misfire code recently which prompted me to just schedule the service vs. getting a DIY kit from Bavauto.com

So Hilton Head BMW (SC) quoted me $650, compared to the "$900-or so", Critz BMW (GA) quoted me plus wanting me to pay for $90 diagnostics testing on the code.

I asked the tech to send me a before and after for comparison. Enjoy.
