1 Series Notchy Gearbox

Hi Guys, I have a 2009 1 series hatchback and the gearbox seems quite notchy. Sometimes stiff to get into certain gears, once I have travelled some miles it seems to get easier, but it is making me not enjoy the car as much anymore.

Do you have any ideas? I've heard the gearbox oil could be replaced and helped? Anyone here had a similar problem with a good outcome? It's mostly first and second gear. Third and above are ok, could be the synchros but even they get better once the car is warm. So which is why I am getting a little annoyed with it.

I really appreciate anyone with time to respond.

Cheers

Has the fluid ever been changed? Try Redline MTL, much better than the OE fluid.

If you search, you will find many threads about it.

+1 for the Redline MTL

Try that and if still not happy, you can try stiffer transmission mounts. I'm running the M3 ones and combined with the MTL, it's much smoother and more direct.

The Redline oil helped in my 130i markedly. I've got a set of e46 M3 transmission mounts and will be fitting those soon.
My tranny works best when I shift higher up the rev range. The box is a bit baulky when tootling around town, but becomes sublime when giving it the berries up a mountain pass, revving it to buggery!
Not so good for the fuel economy, but easier on the gear linkages...

Mine is the same way it almost feels like I'm forcing it to shift and when shifting while cornering it can seem quite aggressive. I've narrowed it down to the soft mounts and the fluid. I work with hydraulics and they react similarly until warmed up. Also like someone else said it likes the higher rpm too, it feels a lot better when I shift at 3000rpm than anything lower as much as I try and take it easy on her and keep rpms low
