Radio volume fluctuation at high volume
Hello all. Does anybody here experience fluctuations in volume when turned up near maximum levels? It seems to be a common problem with E90 cars (examples 1 and 2), but my searches haven't come across similar issues on the 1er. Affected E90s seem to be both HiFi and Logic7; mine is a HiFi system with an early 2008 production.
Symptoms: 1. Volume decreases randomly and sometimes predictably (with bass spikes). It goes back up within 2-6 seconds. Estimated volume reduction is equivalent to 2-3 clicks on the knob. 2. Happens when stopped or moving. Engine running or not. 3. Adjusting S-VOL, AUX vol, bass/treble values has no effect. 4. Was perceptible on completely stock audio system. 5. Extremely obvious with JL XD600/6 and SWS-8x subs @2ohm. My understanding is that a lot of the early radios has issues with the displays going black in high temps, and that BMW replaced them with newer models that also support HD/Sirius. I don't have HD radio and I do experience the pixels being off with temps >80F Does anybody know the module name for the new radios (is it RAD2)? Can any 1/3-series radio be retrofitted in our cars with proper coding? I've tried updating the software but it was already at the latest ZB version (9223675) as of SPDATEN v54. Hardware part number is 9223673. |

Sounds to me like the headunit is going bad. I would look into a replacement of that, and yes, it's a RAD2.

I replaced the headunit with one from a 328i. Volume fluctuation is still present.
Is it worth adding a capacitor in parallel to the amp? Is the stock amp grounding point adequate for a JL XD600? (the one on the driver's side wheel well) |
