Akrapovic E82 1M Downpipes

Akrapovic's new 1M downpipe is one of their most thoroughly developed pieces to date. The ends of the downpipe are cast in stainless steel to allow the best possible exhaust flow, the flex bellows in the downpipe ensure that the exhaust system can move safely without damaging the turbochargers, and reinforced brackets will last for years. O2 sensor bungs are positioned in the factory locations for easy install.

I wonder what improvement in sound and performance one would see with just the downpipes?

Impressed! Beautiful construction.

1. Dyno results would be nice to see when available.

2. Are these Akra's 2 1/2 inch while the A/R's are 3 inch?

3. $$

Beautiful pieces as usual looks to be 2.5" from the bellmounths to the end, curious on how these compare to CP-E pipes as these look similar with exception to the flex joint and brackets.

OK, so I'm a little confused.

a) How does the composition of the "ends of the downpipe" affect flow? Wouldn't the shape be the determining factor?

b) Does this mean that entire DP is not 100% SS?

I hate to sound ignorant but what exactly is the benefit of changing out downpipes? And how involved is the install on the 1M?

Curious to see this item. I have had some BAD experiences with vibration in the past with that type of flex section but interested in seeing it perform. Will these also fit the 135i's N54?

im guessing since akrapovic did their dp's 2.5" all the way through, that all the other manufacturers wasted their time, materials, and valuable space, having a 3" pipe tapering to 2.5" at the outlet?

If I, for whatever reason, replaced my dp's, i would go with 2.5" pipes and heat wrap them.

We need some more research and dynos! - I have heard that the smaller pipe keeps higher exhaust velocity vs larger pipes which allow more volume? I don't know which is superior? Would love to see a head to head comparo.

hate to be the pessimist, but i dont think a comparo will happen until eurotuner or somebody does it. its a lot of money and a lot of work to even do 4 or 5 sets of pipes.

You wouldn't happen to have the full eve system with down pipe in stock, would you?

Yes, all N54 135i 335i and 1M use the same DP's. AR designed versions have been installed on the 1M already.

I think that for relatively tame power levels (bolt ons/tune) the 2.5" should be sufficient. If you go to a 3" you will lose some low end torque/spool up but gain some deeper sound and possibly top end power depending on how restrictive the rest of the system is. It's all about the goals you want to achieve. All in all these are beautiful pieces!

Harold,
What is your opinion regarding 2 1/2" vs 3" DP's?
Thanks

+1. I am new to the bmw world but have been having fun with turbo cars for a long while. I am shocked to see so many people not looking for a true 3" setup. Is it because the majority of people running these engines retain the stock turbos thus you dont need the larger plumbing?

I dont think anyone makes a true 3" do they? i havent shopped for dp's in a while, but i think anyone made a dp with a 3" outlet. i think the biggest issue would be mating it. fitting dual 3" mids, and, unless you put turndowns before the rear axle, the exhaust would bottleneck at the rear axle.
