Yeah, I just pulled them out carefully. Working my way around. Took 30 seconds to get both of them out. To put the new ones in, about 15 seconds. The longest part of the process was trying to match the new grill to which side it belonged on...haha.

I used a flat-head to remove the bottom two and popped the side and top ones right out (quite easily too) ... worked great and easy to do. Thanks!

I received my Perf Grilles today. I read the whole thread and decided to do the 'yank gently' method- no right angles, no torx screwdrivers.
I did so with trepidation but as others have said, grab two fins on each side of each grille (I wore gloves to get some grip and prevent the fins from cutting into my skin) and gently pull, wiggling from side to side. You'll hear each tab unclip and it'll pull out. No breaks, no chipped paint etc. The new ones just snap in easy-peasy... : ) Thanks for all those who've contributed to this thread! |

Thank you for the tutorial. I used the following hook and pick set to remove the existing kidneys, worked a treat and at under $6, you cannot beat it:
The first kidney took the longest, the second kidney was out in seconds. |

Just finished installing my grills. I used a long, thin screwdriver to pop out the top clips. The bottom clips popped out by pulling with some force.
The 90˚ tool and a second set of hands would make it easier, but they aren't required. I have shed blood modding the car (I skinned up a finger pretty good on the second grill) so now it's mine. |

Preface- thanks to the OP and all the others who contributed info to help others swap out kidney grills.
Yesterday I had the Stg I PPK installed on my 2010 135. Today I took a trip to my dealer to purchase the Shadowline Black Performane grills. I read this whole thread on swapping the pieces and mentioned to the two parts guys at the dealer which way they recommend to do it. Both of them in agreement, grasp the installed grills on both sides and pull. No torx screws need to be removed nor clips released needs to be done. They said you need to exert a good amount of pressure to get them out. I got home with new grills and gave it a go. Gripping the grill on either side I started pulling. It felt like it wasnt to release as I would pulling pretty damn hard. I tried again and the bottom clips released. With a little work pulling some more the tops released. Same with the other side. I cleaned up the paint that was kind of mucky where the grills covered and popped the new ones in. They snapped right in with very little effort. The whole deal from start to finish took no longer than 5 min. Easy as pie. The AW front end is now much improved(looks wise) with the new parts. I love it! |

thanks for the great DIY.
I found it easier to remove the top 3 clips, the just by tugging the rest all came off no problem : ).

I did mine in my lunch break in about 5 minutes with no tools.
I was surprised how easy they came out. Just grabbed with two hands, put my thumbs around where the clips were and slowly but firmly pulled and worked from one side to the other. |
