I've been going through all these posts on oil coolers, and was wondering why nobody has simply purchased a generic core (like a Setrab) and just sourced the proper lines and mounted it behind the kidneys, eliminating the stock cooler? Sounds easy enough, but there must be something I'm missing. Anyone care to enlighten a noob to oil cooling? I'd love to just throw in a Dinan unit, but cant see spending $1500. There must be a proper way to do it for half that.

I found this:
http://www.ardesign.info/catalog/ard...ge1-p-191.html

Cheaper, and I'm sure worth it, but can something similar be done that doesnt need the adapter that keeps the oem cooler in place?

I talked to Andrew at ar and he said the 135 is not as deep up front as the E9x and that they won't fit. I bet if we could get 10 people together he would make another try. I am definitely in.

x2

That def sounds like the best path for this, lower price, easier install with no hacking or rewiring of the orig. cooler, etc.

Add cooling (a lot if you are going to do track duty and w added power), and you are fine. But, see the new BMW performance cooling upgrade..BMW has found that the water temps are an issue as well.

I also found it interesting that BMW attacked the water temps directly and not the oil temps with their upgrade power package...probably means something for sure.

The one worry I have about putting a cooler behind the kidneys-

Won't that cover a good chunk of the radiator, which is also undersized.

Well there definitely are solutions because Berk and HP are racing their E82 and E90 in tough events and I believe at least Berk is putting down big horsepower, not so sure what HP is doing engine management wise.

Talking

Dual oil Coolers can be done. Get in touch with the guys at Evolution, I am sure they can sell you the components to set-up a dual cooler system like theirs. I would not put behind the kidneys as water temp is also an issue on our cars driven hard and you want as much flow to the radiator as possible....

WTF. In this way 128i might be a better track car. Hope the M1 will not have this problem, and you'll be able to track it non-stop...

I hit limp mode my first track day with the AFE DCI intake and Remus Axle Back, NO other mods. Given this was February in AZ, circa 80 degrees.

I swapped out the DCI for a stock intake and added JB4 tuner and never hit limp mode. Car was EXTREMELY faster than last time. Only issue was oil temps reduced the boost down to 9psi after 3 to 4 laps. I don't know if the DCI's had anything to do with it or the JB4, but now with my freshly installed Agency Power Downpipes and JIC coilovers, can't wait to see how it does this month! (It's nearing 100 degrees already! )

*Might* try the "Race" MAP on the JB4 with some 100 octane fuel too but I'm afraid that's asking for limp mode in 100 degree weather..........hmm..............

No Oil Temp Issues

I have JB4, FMIC, Catless DPs, Intake, Exhaust, Charge Pipe, BOV, as well as the Performance Wheel which shows the water and oil temps.

I have never seen the oil temp go up more than about 10 degrees F when pushing the car hard and I have the stock oil cooler. I dont think this mod would ever help me unless i turned the car into a racer and ran it around a track for hours.

Red Stapler: Did the FMIC help noticeably? Charge Pipe and BOV? Was considering those items along with Mid Pipe next....

Haha..even with an FMIC and open DP's i would be pretty freaked out about beating the shit outta my car in 100+ degree weather. Thankfully it doesnt get much above 95 at the highest here in Raleigh.

It was 85 just now and I was doin a tour of some of the sweet ass backroads right near me one of which has about a mile long sweet straightaway, was in 6th, shifted back to 4th n almost WOT'd it to 6k rpm into 5th and 6th both down and back. I dont even have a FMIC yet and my temp readings still were barely above 230F and they normally hover around 210-220 with normal driving.

Mind you i had also been giving the engine some pedal love for bout 20 minutes before this on other roads so, Im assuming adding the FMIC with my soon to be installed BMS DCI will really spice things up a bit, specially if I do decide to go with the Cobb unit. Im just spliced between saving money to spend on gas to see my lovely lady who lives 6 hours north right now, or spend the money on my car and be broke from the cost of gas to go north

Sure would like to see pics of a stock unit next to a couple of the competitors to get an idea of sizes, surface area etc.
