winter rim / tire options for 135i

I have the 135i with m-sport package on order. Any suggestions on where to get the best winter wheel / tire package?

Tirerack. 17" wheels and either 205/50/17 or 225/45/17 Dunlop D3's Ask Gill@Tirerack and I think he will agree. Thats what I will do. But I must decide if I want to cut through the snow better with the 205's or get 225's for better handling when the streets are clear of snow. Def get V rated snows if you can, they handle much much better than Q rated snows which are for really bad winters and ice. It depends on what type of winters you have.

Would I be able to get a set of wheel/tire combo that are the same size for all 4 or do they have to be staggered (will be my first rwd)? Logic says yes, but just want to be sure. I want to have no worries for Upstate NY winters, so what would be best recommended (want to have great confidence)?

1 size all around will be most popular, though staggered will be available. Give me a call anytime to talk it over. There are endless choices.:w00t:

When will the staggered options be available on TR? There aren't any right now for snowies.

Juast an open question for everyone -

Will there be approporiate winter tires for the stock 18" rims or would new 17" rims with winter tires be significantly safer?

Late summer or early fall is when they should start coming in. People looking for staggered sets will like this one in 225/40/18 & 255/35/18. Obviously this won't work extremely well for heavy snow. For light snow or well plowed areas this would be a great blend of winter performance and aesthetics for the vehicle.

The Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60. It's much improved in the areas the WS-50 was lacking while keeping nearly the same snow grip and improved ice performance.

These are outstanding!

Hi Gill. How will this set of winters work in a NYC suburb that sees a few storms during the winter months. Streets are generally well plowed, but you get the occasional snow covered side street. Thanks in advance! :biggrin:

It would be perfect for that.

When I had WS-50s on my E36, they were really soft and squirrely on dry roads. Is this one of the areas the WS-60 improves upon? The WS-60 seems to have a very similar shoulder design, which I always thought was the source of the issues with the WS-50s.

Obviously a studless such as the Blizzak WS series won't have the dry road performance of the "Performance Winter" tires, but gosh darn they were almost unstoppable in the snow!

From personal experience, the WS-60 handles much better than the 50.

Hey Gill. Would you mind posting a picture of these snows on a set of rims that look as close to the OEM 18" 135i rims you have? Also, how much would they run for a set of four (rims, tires, and sensors included). I am assuming I would have to get sensors if I want the light on the dash to go off. Thanks in advance for the info! :thumbup:

I don't have a way to post a picture of them together but I can run a quick price for you. I'll use the Sport Edition KV5 in the example. It's one of the wheels that looks closest to the 264.

KV5 = $128
WS60 = $135 (225/45/17)
Sensors = $38
Valve = $8
Mount/Balance = $0
--------------------------
Total $1236 plus shipping (zip code based - expect about $80 total)

There are a few other wheels that look somewhat close to the 264. Insert their price to get a new total.

Rial Porto $155
OZ Canyon $226
Sport Edition KM11 $134

Here's a link to all the options in the 17" to go with those Blizzaks.

Gill

****I guess the individual links don't work. Click the "all the options" and filter by 17" only to see them. Sorry.

Why are some asking what is best for deep snow? If you have deep snow, you need atleast AWD.

With deep snow you need a narrow true snow tire like a 205/50/17" Blizzak LM 25. If its too deep nothing will help. The bottom of the car will bottom out.

Thanks for the info Gill! I hate to ask stupid questions, but here is another... are there any after market rims you can place a "BMW" emblem in the center, so they look more like stock rims? Or is this just a bad idea? :iono:

Not stupid at all. It's very important to many people, including me.

The KM11, Sport Edition A7, and the Sport Edition F10 will all take an OE cap.
