The conti's are decent for the money and the Borbets would work well. You wouldn't be able to get the Blizzaks for the same money but they would outperform the Conti's in the categories that matter for winter driving.

Either set up would work.

Gill, I purchased Blizzak's 225/45-17 RFT a year ago for my E90. Do you have any wheels for the 135i that would fit these tires? Thanks!

Gill,
I checked on Bridgestone website, but it looks they don’t even manufacture Blizzak WS-60 in the size that tirerack recommends for 135 - 205/50-17 .Which Blizzaks did you had in mind when saying “but they would outperform the Conti's ” ?

Closest WS-60 I see is 215/50-17, would that fit on 17” Borbet’s (Borbet Type CA ) that Tirerack recommends?

Yes, we have many choices.

Sorry I was not more specific. 225/45/17 is the size I would recommend if you were going to use the WS-60. 205.50.17 is too narrow for my taste on the 135i, though it does fit and works fine.

Would 17x8 be the correct wheel size?

Gill, going back to the 225/40/18 option for snowies on the 1. What is the total OD on the 225/40/18 option compared to the stock 215/40/18 and 245/35/18 OD?

The reason I ask is because we have TPW in Canada instead of TPMS which I gather uses speed differences of the tire which would be affected by the OD.

25.1" on the 225/40/18.

24.8" and 24.7" on the OE tires, front/rear.

Your system will only note differences in rotation between the 4 individual tires on the car at any given time. It won't notice differences in the change from OE diameters to a new size.
As long as your tires are all the same OD you will be fine, OE size or not. It only becomes an issue when 1 or more tires, of the four on the car, start rotating slower or faster than the rest.

I have the same tires, already mounted on BMW 17" rims designed for the E90 - would they work for the 135i, or would the offset be wrong?

If the offset is wrong, would a spacer help or is it wrong the wrong way?

I was told the offset is wrong, the wheels would stick out. I also have an E90 17 inch winter set I wanted to use for the 1Series.

These are outstanding!

That is what I am going for. Luckily I won't need to drive in the snow if I don't want to though.

Gill, I will be in touch in a few months. Make sure to have a GB or special price around Sep., Oct.

Gill,
My 135i convertible already has 205/50/17 standard OE Goodyear tires, so I can't see the sense of going to a wider tire for winter such as the 225/45/17 you suggest. Will Blizzack make the WS-60 in my size? Will it be run-flat ?

Thanks!

There won't be any run flat snow tires in that size. The best "snow" tire in that size will be the Michelin XI2 at $128 per tire.

Gill, What about these Continental & Pirelli's? I searched by run-flat in my size on your site and they popped up. Do you not like these names? Would you stick with those Michelin XI2 instead, even though they're not Run-Flat ?
Thanks again for your help/advice!

My apologies. Those did not turn up on my internal search and I'm not sure why.
Those are available and would be fine to use for winter. They are higher speed rated performance winter tires so they won't be quite as good as the Michelin will be on ice and snow, but they will handle a bit better and give you the run-flat capability, if desired. They will certainly be better than any all-season tire you could use for winter.

Is there any way to order those online, or would I have to call to get though?

We'd have to do that by phone. They are not listed online.

Gill,

What do you think about the Sottozero's? I'm looking for something that is performance oriented in a cold weather tire (not necessarily need great snow or ice capabilities as I have my wife's AWD XC90 for those days) but something that will not be a huge drop off from my stock tires and will do well in wet and cold conditions. These are pricey but could get with the 255/35 and 225/40 combo for a decent winter set without needing to buy a spare or tire goo or other fix-a-flat type stuff that ruins the tire pressure sensors. I was thinking maybe a good all season might work ok for me too but it does get below freezing most morning commutes and not sure which would be a good way to go. Any suggestions or thoughts are greatly appreciated! Will probably go with ASA AR1 (unless I can get a nice CSL option somewhere)...Anyway, thanks!!

Mike, that Pirelli would do a fine job for you for the conditions you describe, especially if you encounter ice and snow. If you only encounter cold then the all-season would be fine.

Seems I saw earlier that a staggered set of winter tires (light snow use, moderately cold weather) in OE sizes would be available late summer / early fall. Haven't seen those online yet. Are these still coming?

Gill,
What do you think of the LM-25s vs. WS-60s? Is there a noticeable difference in the performance aspect when it's dry out? I have mild winters, with occasional ice on the roads. Usually just a few inches of snow, sometimes more-which turns to slush. 40% snow, 40% slush and 20% ice. Also, what tire size recommendation for each on a 17x8 rim(KM-11)? Thanks.
