and we think we have it tough...

In the Netherlands on business. Saw the price for 95 RON fuel at a service station, EUR1.39/L, about AUD2.19/L. Checked out 1-series car prices. A 125i coupe with metallic paint, M-Sport pack and 18" M-wheels works out to be ~AUD74,400 list. I guess 19% GST will do that to you. BTW, you have to order the "High Executive" option to score A/C.

Also today saw a model which AFIK we don't have in Oz - a 3-door hatch.

I want to come home, and drive in sunshine on roads without snow and ice on them!

In terms of fuel prices the reverse is true in the States.

Just back from California a week or so ago. I managed to fill the new 2010 Ford Taurus I had as a renter for the equivalent of about AUD$44 on a couple of occasions. I think it was about a 70 litre tank which makes the cost of the fuel around 63 cents or so per litre.

Apart from the cheap petrol I didn't manage to find too much else especially nice in SoCal - certainly not the Taurus.

Probably explains why they all ride bikes around.
Then again, even at A$2+ per litre it's still a relatively minor cost when compared with overall ownership of the car.

Oman was even cheaper. I had a rental car there and regular unleaded fuel worked out to be 34c per litre. Fuel is so cheap (and car theft so infrequent) that Omanis leave their cars running when they go to a bank, a shop, etc.

On the other hand, what happened when the Aus$ was at 47cents. It's all relative. But, the dutch cars/fuel sure are expensive either way.

You'd be going to find a hill to ski on in the Netherlands. Flat as, with most of it being below sea level!
