Australian Custom Duty Tax

Hi all

Just need further clarification on import duties as long as you total declared value of good does not exceed $1000 AUD.

I bought my parts from the overseas merchant:

Coilovers €585 (Based on exchange rate of 1€ = 1.486 AUD)
Brake lines €95

UPS wants me to pay import duties and taxes as my goods are in one parcel shipment

But the coilovers is under one invoice number and the brake lines is under another number.

Unless Australian Customs combine both invoices together which you can't I presume as both parts have separate invoice numbers.

Please advice.

Garage List
What you need to do is have them shipped to different addresses - if its the same name and address you get stung.

Okay, thanks for the feedback guys, the tax is $ 267.87 AUD in total, which is not too hefty.

Cheers.

As mentioned above, it is per shipment - actually the goods might even arrive days apart and if customs determines that it is one consignment (same sender, same addressee), then taxes will be due. I gave a bit of an explanation here, which included a couple Customs links. Note, the exchange rate is not what you were charged (e.g. by you bank, PayPal, etc), it is as determined by Customs on the date of export. Customs also charges a processing fee. So $270 seems reasonable, dependent on the shipping cost (which I worked out to be at least AUD $500).

Thanks 135, lesson 1 learnt

Will be more cautious next time when purchasing overseas.
