why no parts around for 6spd manual??
I got an 09 128 with 6 so man with 63000km or 40000miles . first gear kept popping out...got a trans shop to look at it had to drop tranny and open. The units are completely sealed from factory and dealers can access any internal parts for repair only new whole units. Even phoning around major parts places don'tseem to have any. Long story short only fix was to get a rebuilt unit install $4500. If parts were more readily avail perhaps this would have been less costly. Diagnose was broken first gear fork and some gear wear in first . all other gears good.

I suppose generally it is because no one breaks them, but it certainly would be better to have it be user serviceable.

Its because BMW does not think its dealer techs can rebuild a transmission correctly! No Joke!! So you get a factory rebuilt transmission instead. Same thing with the engines(long blocks) that need replacing. You get a rebuilt unit unless none are available and then you get a new unit.
Most manufactures would rather pay for a new(rebuilt) trans or engine ONCE then pay the same tech time and time again to repair it and try to learn what he or she did wrong. Quote:

Weird thing about situation is dealer shop says they never open the transmissions. So if a trans shop opens the orig trans and discovers the issue inside....what is stopping you from putting back together and back in car? I mean it was driveable just with the annoying slipping of first . would their be a major potential for the whole unit just to fail out of blue sometime even if I drive it gingerly?
