Anyone use a police scanner
Hey guys figured this was the most appropriate forum to post in. Looking into Radar Detectors and police scanners. I dont really know anything about police scanners, what to look for, good brands etc. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bigtime 1Addicts thread on radar detectors here. Who likes what and why, etc. A good read altogether. Searchee searchee!
As far as a police scanner goes, if you have a smartphone with 3G data speeds you can stream many counties from Scanamerica. (I use F-Stream for the iPhone). Really, there is a lot of chatter on these things, not just talking about speed traps. They are not saying "I am sitting at State & Main St. waiting for speeders....Yup, looking for speeders at State & Main...nothing yet, but if they are speeding I will find them at...." You have to filter your listening significantly. I DEFINITELY would not rely on a scanner alone as my sole defense against speeding; a CB radio would serve you much better for this purpose. Radar/Laser Detector = best defense. Spend as much as you can afford; Escort, Bel and V1 products are worth the investment, Cobra and Whistler not so much.

Yea im def thinking the V1, but figured the scanner would be a good weapon to add to the arsenal. Plus I'm going to me making trips to the Jersey Shore a lot this summer so i wanna have something else to stay on top of the traffic/police situations on 95. Just wasnt really sure where to start. I read about analog/trunked/digital etc, just wasnt really sure where to start and figured people here would have to know something.

I really don't have any experience with Blackberry at all. I guess I would do a web search on "Blackberry web radio streaming" or something similar. Maybe browse/search Howardforums.com Blackberry section. Those guys know everything.
Cheers!

Bearcat used to make a mobile scanner specifically for monitoring state police and speed traps. It was programmed with the state police frequencies by state (you select your state) and would give an alert tone and light when it picked up anything. It also would scan the CB frequencies very rapidly so you could monitor the trucker chatter on all channels. I used on quite a bit and it worked quite well. Don't know if they still make it or not. I have my old one sitting at home, but don't use it anymore.

Hmmm, that bearcat looks pretty interesting. I just have a lil' ol' RadioShack scanner. But for long road trips up & down California, this might prove to be helpful. Thanks for the info
