Clutch Drive-ability
Hey guys
I bought my 135i a little while ago and have already done so much to improve the overall feel of the car.... I've already installed a modified CDV, BMW performance SSK and a clutch stop.... But the clutch feel is still quite vague or rubber band like, when quick shifting.... If I shift like a "gentlemen" everything works fine but slow.... So for the experts out there I have two questions... 1. Does anyone have any experience with removing the clutch pedal spring? I have heard good things but I am worried about longevity.... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=683372 http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...=195777&page=2 2. Has anyone here installed the ultimate clutch pedal on their 1er? any positive reviews? I couldnt find one!!!!! http://www.bavauto.com/fland.asp?par...Fc8kgQodLFgA5w help me love my car! Been driving manuals for several years and have never felt so disconnected from my transmission before...

I always felt the clutch pedal was a bit soft, and I felt like i had to raise my foot too high to reach the engagement point. I installed the UCP and it fixed both of my issues. I can't remember how much the UPC reduces the pedal travel distance, but it feels massive. The engagement point is almost immediate and the clutch pedal sits lower than the brake. I also have the spring set to the middle setting and it is about twice as firm as the stock clutch pedal. It definitely took a day or two to get familiar with the new feel, but I can't imagine going back to the stock pedal. I have never tried the "race" setting, but judging by how firm the middle setting is, the race setting must be a serious work out.
Here's a picture of where the clutch pedal rests relative to the brake pedal. Last edited by Pig Farmer; 03-30-2015 at 09:35 PM.. |

I can't remember the company's name right now. I'll pull out the receipts and let you know. They were pretty reasonable (less than BMW's performance pedals) and you can get different textures/finishes. The gas pedal is wider than stock and smooth which makes heel-toe much easier.

There's defiantly less play with the UPC, the pedal action is smooth but firm, and there's no guessing where the engagement point is (it's nearly immediate), so I equate that with feel/consistency. Even with the aluminum pedal covers, I can confirm that there's no annoying vibration or anything else that detracts from the feel. The only downside I can think of (with my setup) would be if you are in the habit of driving bearfoot. The added pressure needed to engage the clutch and the knurled pedal covers would be hard on your left foot.

Very interesting pedal, something I will certainly consider in the future. But for what it's worth, you can get a very good improvement out of your factory pedal by installing a stop and replacing the bushing with delrin (although if you're going to have it that far apart, I'm thinking replacing the whole pedal wouldn't be too much more work, just a little more cash).

Pig farmer thanks for all of the input!!
I was driving around today and payed special and close attention to the clutch engagement point.. Guess what! I don't feel one! So like you stated since we know it's up high I just modulated my inputs but it all felt very virtual and without any feel.. But I was able to shift smoother... Most importantly you mentioned that this aftermarket pedal will make the clutch pedal the same height as the brake pedal. Which will definitely help keep my feet in a more comfortable position instead of having my foot almost ankle high while releasing the clutch (exaggerated)..
