Newbie checking in...

Hi, All-

First post here. I'm one of the moderators over at M5board.com - I own a 2000 E39 M5, 110K miles, had it since new, love it, hope to keep it for another 100K miles. But that isn't why I'm writing.

My german girlfriend is just turning 50 and has led a life of putting everyone else before herself. I "convinced" her it was time to ditch her 120K mile Subaru and treat herself to a real car. It is a bit of a financial stretch, but we now have on order a 325i, Monaco blue over black, manual trans (yes! that's what she wanted!) sport package plus a few comfort & utility features I have grown to love in the M5: seat heaters, sunshades and fold-down rear seat. That's it - saving money on the rest of the stuff. Got the car for $500 over invoice - didn't work too hard at that. It is now in "awaiting delivery" status. I paid for the sport package, she is paying the rest.

So I need to come up to speed on the new car. In particular, I'd like to take her to a track day or two with the car once it has a good 5K on it or so. I tracked my M5, but it was SO hard on brakes and front tires I decided not to do it again. (I had an '01 Porsche 996 Turbo for 3 years, and I tracked it at Laguna Seca a couple days each year - a lifelong dream fulfilled -- so I didn't HAVE to track the M5 ) Of course I could have gone the aftermarket route, but I like whuppin' peoples' a$$es with the car and being able to tell them "it's bone stock."

Are there any weak links? I'm a "demon braker" - have people had trouble with fluid boiling, uneven pad deposition (aka rotor warping), other?

Thanks in advance...

welcome! i LOVE e39 styling, so i envy you for having an M5!
i heard very few, if any, complaints about durability and/or mechanical failures when pushed to the limits. i'm still breaking mine in so i'm very nice to it, for now.
i went to a couple of BMW events where they let us take the E90s on the track and people were literally beating the shit out of them, including myself. then, a professional driver took us around the track and i felt like a grandma driver next him, and the car held up really, really nice. so, i guess you shouldn't have any problems with it, even if you try to "break the demon"

Welcome aboard.... I too haven't heard anything bad about the E90's track credentials.

Welcome to the forum. Here's the link to a thread from a member (redfirebeemer) who tracks his E90. From his post he seems to indicate that he didn't experience much brake fade. Perhaps you can gleam some more info from him on tracking the E90.

I remember going to the bmw dealership and testing out a manual non-ZSP 325i, drove it real softly and gently, and the salesman just cracked up and said "'ets switch". So he gets in the drivers seat and starts driving the shit out of the car, breaking and turning and accelerating like he's running from a monster the size of King Kong. He said: "You can do this with any car, but you'll destroy it. With the E90, its designed for it and will do fine."

Don't know if all that is true or not.

Welcome and congrats to your girlfriend on choosing a wonderful car.

Although it is a BMW with all of the BMW technology etc, it is first and foremost a standard family sedan street car. It is meant for the public roads system unlike your M made monster car.

It will no doubt survive the track during which time you will really see the full potential of the car. However, it is full of electronic safety features some which can be disabled for specific reasons such as track work.

I think you will need to try the car on the track yourself (or your girlfreind will) and see how it affects the workings. Being the car that it is, the race around the track should be a lot of fun.

All the best.

Hey Greg, what's up!?
Don't know if you remember me, check the name and see if you can figure it out. Glad to hear you're still in the M5.

I have no track experience so I can't help you with your questions, so just saying hi and welcome to the forum. It's a great group!

Sure I remember you. How are things? I use my cupholder very day.....

'Member that engineering project I talked to you about? Abandoned it for a while. But I'm making these and selling a lot of them. I recently got my own lathe and milling machine so I can do some decent precision work - maybe I'll get back on that project.

Cheers!
