Advice from Colorado Folks

Hello Everone,

I'm a newbie here and was wondering if I could get some advice from the local 135 owners.

The wife and I are very interested in getting a 135, but I am having hesitation due to our weather conditions and RWD.

So for example, the snow storm that we had today. Currently we drive a 3/4 ton 4wd diesel truck. Our driving habits are such that we leave the truck in 2wd, unless we absolutely need 4wd. Well this morning it was very slick on the north side of town (thornton/westminster) and we had to use 4wd quite a bit to get moving. Yes I know I'm talking about a 6000lb truck with 600lbs of torque and all season tires, but does anyone have any input on how the 135 handles in our icy/slushy conditions like this morning?

I am seriously wondering if the 135 is a bad idea and if we need to look at the 335xi.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey bud, welcome. I will get right to the point. If you plan on purchasing this car you will most certainly need winter tires, some aggressive winter tires. As the performance tire that come on the car are WORTHLESS in the snow, even in light amounts.

I've been caught out twice now and limped home but almost didn't make it once. We have a 330xi and use that during the winter months as the 135 if just the "fun" car for us.

I would say if you're looking for an all around excellent car the 335xi is a great choice coupe or sedan. I just recently test drove the X5d and think that if you're looking for economy and torque diesels would be a good solution. Again the 335d would probably require snow tires.

Thanks for the Reply Peakrunner. I'm already working with Gill on wheels/tires for either car. The big worry that I have is RWD vs AWD.

I've driving RWD for many years, I just have no way of directly comparing the mass torque of a diesel to a performance car like these. Which is my reason for the question.

thanks
Kev

The 135 builds torque early and continuously. I think with a good set of tires you should manage fine around Denver. The traction control does a great job of keeping things under control if you have traction. LOL.

If you are looking for a car both of you can drive confidently in the winter and for excursions to the high country this time of year I would go with the 335xi.

I know that some would probably argue that and this being a 1 series house I would expect it. Good thing is that the weather doesn't stay bad around Front Range for very long so it's a toss up unless it's your only car.

My wife and I live in Broomfield, picked up a 135i convertible on Saturday. We went in for the 335xi, but just couldn't resist the fun that this car is. Of course it snowed Sunday night!

For now, we are working with Gill on winter tires. We have a AWD SUV, but would like to be able to take this car out in a pinch.

Well it looks like you'll have some good weather at least for a few days. I can't argue the fun factor, the 335 is a nice car, but I didn't bond with it like the 135.

Have fun with it!

Cool, a person with a 135i in Broomfield, hopefully I'll see you around when I get mine.

My experience has been that a rwd sports car with good winter tires can manage-but if you need a car that you can rely on to be drivable year round then you should get the xi. That said, remember that awd only helps to get you moving, not to get you around a corner or to slow you down. For a short commute or if you are driving on fairly well traveled roads then I would think a 135 could get you by. If you drive through hilly no mans land and you consistently need a car for the winter months, I would recomend rwd.

Thanks for all of the great advice everyone.

The wife and I took our time test driving both the 135 and the 335xi and ended up getting the xi's.

We really like the driveability of the 135. That car definately was very precise, but I the 2 things that really made us settle on the xi's were the AWD and having a sedan.

Looks like you already made the choice I was going to suggest. My 135 sits in the garage when it snows, while the WRX is my winter toy.
