Dyno Day

Attended a dyno day yesterday with a few of my buddies. I'm running a stock tune, but with a maddad midpipe and remus axle back. These are 5th gear pulls. My buddy with a 2002 E46 M3 w/ euro headers ran 288 whp/242 tq and another buddy with an E92 M3 ran 343 whp/255 tq. I'm not sure how to dissect dyno numbers, but enjoy.

Those are obviously at the wheel numbers and seem pretty high for a mostly stock car with just 2/3 of the exhaust is modded. I know that dynojet numbers read much higher than Mustang dynos. My recent dyno run on a Mustang dyno (car 100 % stock) just before the install of Evolve Race exhaust with N55 mids ended up with almost identical numbers with what GIAC reported in the past for their stock 1M: max. 294.2 hp and 342.9 lb.-ft of torque which (if I follow what my dyno operator and others suggest) should interpret like a minimum 353 hp (or 358 ps) and 411.5 lb.ft (or 558 nm) crank. I was told to multiply the atw numbers by 1.2 to reach calculated crank numbers for a well calibrated Mustang dyno. And since I matched exactly the same of GIAC test I kind of feel safe about the dyno that I used.

Either way, there is no denying that BMW claims of 340 ps and 450 (+50) nm are somehow underrated, especially the torque figure. 1M is closer to 360 ps and 560 nm and sweet spot is anywhere between 2500 to 5000 rpm. Another note I observe, the hp does not fall very sharply like other stock N54 versions and stick pretty well till almost 6500 which is where you should consider changing the gear already anyway. I like the way that M engineers designed stock map.

By the way, what was the fuel you were using at the time of dyno?

It was either 91 or 93...can't recall.

As far as dynos go, not all dynos are created equal. Dynojets do read higher than mustangs, but I wasn't posting my numbers to flex my love member. It was more for the video and sound, but then I figured folks would ask for the printout.

Forgot that. Sounds good too

HP is consistent with other 1M Dynojet runs with midpipes. Exhaust doesn't contribute unless it's a straight thru like the Meistershaft. Power is falling off at 5k which is at the lower end (5k - 5.5k rpm). It would be easier viewed if a smoothing factor was used. Max torque is at the higher end of the spectrum.

Interesting that it measured only 19 hp short of the e92 M3.

How did you get past the speed limiter to top out 5th gear?

I have no idea. I was surprised to see speeds that high in 5th, too.

I have wittnessed 270 km/h in 5th on the road and it was still going when I stepped back. I doubt that my car has a top speed limiter other than its drag coefficient! Euro spec. car and stock everything at the time I did that. And I am surprised that you found a dyno shop which actually made a 5th gear run. My shop here refused even the idea of it as a principal. 1/1 ratio, kind of ideal isn't it? Can it explain slightly high numbers?

Mine is not a euro spec, if that matters any. I heard/read 5th gear is closest to 1/1 ratio, so it's best to do pulls in 5th. Who knows and really, who cares? The link below disputes the theory. So, to answer your question....no. I, too, have heard of shops that don't like the high speeds on their dyno. Not sure why? Safety?

Check out the link below....pretty good discussion.

Thanks for the link, pretty impressive dose of information there. The reason why they don't do 5th gear run is safety but I find it a bit irrelevant cause if that's the speed they are worried about then there is plenty of it even at 4th gear.

Your results are pretty much consistent with mine (and other 1///Ms). Fully stock on a Dynojet I was at 315whp/355tq. The MadDad midpipe and Akra slip on added 10 to both figures, which is right where your power figures are and your car seems to be making even more tq.

But as has been stated, it is the delta that really matters (relative to say the M3, or to what you were pushing stock, all on the same dyno).

Those are great numbers especially if compare to that M3! No matter the dyno, you were within 20hp of what is rated at 414!

Smoke billowing during dyno of a Belgian 1M. Dyno was aborted. Owner initially thought there was an engine issue. It appeared to be an unintentional burnout. To avoid another burnout two men took place in the backseats and the dyno was resumed (tune: 418hp - 660Nm).

Just remembered this; when I did second dyno (Mustang) after installing N55mids and Evolve rear exhaust (which is a very comparable set up to mikewillis 1M) the dyno operator showed me some other results from the same dyno, there was a 2012 E92 M3 with 323 whp and done almost same time with my stock dyno, that was a stock M3 before installing a supercharger at that shop. Mine was 294 whp stock and 301 after exhaust. So, like other posts here I was also within similar range, a mere 22 whp from a 2012 E92 M3. Even the stock 1M was just 29 whp away. There is no way that a 1M is 340 ps crank, if a M3 really makes 420 ps or vice versa, period!

EDIT: Tq difference between stock 1M to stock E9X M3 is huge, literally around 50 to 60 % difference there. However, M3 really has one of the flatest curves I've ever seen.

Nice pull, roughly as expected. It's another data point that confirms the 1M is usually making ~20-30 hp less than the M3. Lots of dynos suggest this, and that's before any turning.
