"Sinking" driver's seat - cause and solution!
Do you have this feeling like the bottom cushion of your seat has sunken and makes your butt drop too low while the side bolsters feel uncomfortable against your thighs?
I did. Since I got my sport seats, gently used, I couldn't help to notice that the driver's seat feels softer than passenger's. I had a hardest time finding comfortable seating position while in the driver's seat, no amount of adjustment would help to raise my ass out of that cavern... yet when on the other side, it felt firm and supportive. I had enough of this and decided to look underneath to inspect for any obvious reasons for it. And low and behold I found a simple answer why my seat felt soft and sunken. All of the three steel springs that run along the seat bottom underneath and support the foam cushion have detached from their retainers at the back end of the seat. I snapped them back on and OMG - feels like it should now - nice and firm. No more sinkhole under my ass and so much more comfortable. You should check yours, asap. The pictures show the underside of the drivers seat.
Once you look under there, you will know. But the point is, if any of the springs that support the seat bottom cushion unhook from their mounting points, your ass will sink into the seat. I have three sets of seats - one in the car and two on the shelf (it's complicated...) and all driver side seats had at least one of those springs detached and therefore support was compromised - so I believe this to be a common issue, but since most nobody looks under there, the assumption is that this is "normal" when the seat starts to sag. The pictures are showing one of the springs detached (before) and attached properly (after) Also, the entire seat underneath, for reference - you can see the springs and their attachment points there. Do you see it now? Last edited by vinylengraver; 04-20-2018 at 02:46 PM.. |

Yes, I can see it now in your new pics. Couldn't make it out in your first two pics but now that you pointed it out I can see what you mean.
Don't have that problem but if I ever get that sinking feeling I'll know why and what to do. Thanks for posting...
