Yes, I think i forgot to write "Lazy" as one of my reasons, maybe was too lazy to put it.

I'm running the N54.

if there's no code thrown, there's no reason why people on here won't splice the wire and install a switch up by the drivers seat that turns on and off the valve so you can eliminate drone on the highway or the city if it anoys you, but turn it back off for when you're in a playfull mood.

would be very easy to do. Something i may do if i don't get an exhaust in the near future. but i really don't mind the drone as i have a bunch of hissing out the front of the car anyhow because of the intake, it's just one more noise.

Performance remained the same as far as I could tell from seat of the pants. I don't have access to a dyno, and didn't car to try a stop watch.

Milage, well it went from 23mi/gal to 21.5mi/gal and then has not gone back up after removing the mod. I bought a house during that time and went from 12mi highway and 5 mi backroad to a complete back road drive to work, so I would imagine the commute change is the ONLY contributor to milage. One long trips on the highway that I have tracked, still getting ~27-28mi/gal. So I don't think the mod had an effect on fuel economy.

The noise. was it louder, yes def, but I also have hypersensitive hearing. so I notice a lot more than most people. It was really only different when I would Sidestep/heel-toe the throttle when in low rpm (<3K rpm) around town driving. which makes sense since this is probably what the silencer is used for.... noise polution in cities.

During the mod, I got a check engine light. dealer says it is a gas tank vent valve that has to be replaced. Could it be the mod.... maybe?? will I ask my dealer to confirm, FUCK NO!

After my service will I put the mod back on? No!

Just my experience
I wouldn't do it on a non turbo. backpressure.

Anyways, question for you. First, do you have an N54 or N55? secondly, (and this part is for everyone), have any of you noticed the cool sound the 135i makes when you are in second gear, coasting at around 20-25mph, and you barely tap the throttle. And i mean tap, like not even enough to accelerate. Sometimes you dont even have to tap the throttle to hear it, it'll sometimes do it on the overrun as the car is decelerating. But the exhaust will garble so much it sounds awesome. You can really hear it if you are next to a wall or some parked cars. I didnt notice it before I did this mod, but I enjoy hearing it now!
I've had the Golf Tee in my N54 since early this year and I think the car's way too quiet whenever I take it out before a visit to the dealership (which is many times, but whinging about this is for another time).

I know EXACTLY the garbling sound you are describing! It's most obvious in a carpark when I'm approaching a speed hump and have to back off the throttle in 2nd gear. There's a very noticeable overrun rumble. It's almost like the car's going "GRRRRRRRRR I'M SO ANGRY I HAVE TO DRIVE SO SLOWLY RARAGGHHGHAGHHH"

over time, will the tie wrap kink method cause permanent deformation of the vacuum hose from many heat/cool cycles on the contorted hose?

I would definitely think that this would be a real possibility. I would just go ahead and use the golf tee…that’s what I use and I’m not sure what you’re saving by not using it.

there's a picture of the module back on page 7, i couldn't figure out how to quote someone's picture. but just take a look at that and it will give you an idea.

there's a metal clip holding it in place, just pull the thing outwards, then you should be able to easily wiggle the wire free.

post number 141 on page 7 to be exact.

Hey guys, so back when i had my 335 we all did this and to this day i still dont know why people do this whole "golf tee" stuff... there is a simpler way!!!!!!

for those that dont know, you open your trunk, in the 1 series, you remove the little cover that is found on the drivers side , inside trunk, where the taillight is. opent that up, there is 2 cutouts in the 1 series, my 335 had 1. the second smaller one, closer to the tire is the one you want. its sort of difficult but you have to push out the cushoin thing just a little bit untill you see the valve. there is a little plastic actuator with a metal pin. PUSH IN the pin, and pull up the cap and it will come out.

DONE!

it sends a message straight down! to where you guys are zip tieing and all this other stuff and tells the flapper to remain open. This may throw a internal code into the system, however, i assure you BMW does not care about this. i had my car in and out of service for 2 years, replaced fuel pumps, the works! and never had issues with this.

save yourself the time, and headache of perhaps maybe damaging anything down there physicall by using this method. here is a pic. PM me if you have any questions.

My car seems pretty 'throaty' a low RPM, making me wonder if someone has already performed this mod on it. I do wonder if performing this mod could cause the flap in the muffler to seize in the open position over time due to soot/carbon buildup.

I considered that too. However. If you're to sell the car, just hook it back up. And don't worry, not like the next owner will care, they would likely do it too

Just did this on my 09 129 using the vaccum plug method in the first post. Tuns out the 3/16 plug for the valve actuator was too loose and fell out after onr trip around the block. I used a 5/32 which was perfect.

Sound difference is VERY subtle. Meh.

Well I reversed the mod. I really could tell hardly any difference in the sound and I don't know what long term issues there may be with this. Back to stock it is.

Zip tie did the trick easily. Small difference in the cabin at low RPM unless there's an object nearby for the sound to bounce off or you're in a carpark/ enclosed space.

I'm wondering if the higher fuel consumption people have reported has been from greater than normal usage of the loud pedal to test the mod
