128 Lightning Package
Just went to the configurator and noticed that BMW forces you to drop $3,600 on top of $900 just to get the xenon. What a brilliant marketing coup...

BMW isn't the only car Manufacturer that does this. Just for instance, the Silverado 1500 I price out makes you get a $850 package when you all you want is a $150 rear defogger or $3.5k+ package when all you want is the ~$1200 Z71 package. Like I said, it's not just BMW. Today you truly can't custom order the exact car you want without having to be required to get something else.

Audi is even worse. You can't order anything separate on those cars and they come plain as fuck. By the time you have an a4 decently equipped its over 50k which is just crazy. I consittered a new a4 before I ordered my 1er and I was shocked to discover that the signature Audi led daytime lamps aren't even standard it's n a package option. Who the F wants an Audi without that its like what they r known by these days.

On the other hand, there is manufacturer like Porsche where every darn thing is an option. You can certainly customize the car exactly the way you want but you pay good $ to do that.

I think we all agree that some options should not be in packages like xenon headlights for instance. Back when the car was released in '08, I clearly remember that you were able to order a 128 with xenon as a standalone option. My guess is that they want to get rid of a many parts as possible before the car goes out of production and unfortunately it seems the best way to do it is by screwing customers over. I don't care if BMW are not the only doing that, that's not an excuse. No manufacturer should do that, period.

BMW isn't making much money when you decide that you want the heated seats over regular seats. Most car companies are making their money off of the financing, not the vehicles themselves. Toyota last year made 1.6 billion dollars in the U.S. However, they lost 0.8 billion dollars on actual vehicle sales, the profit resulted in the 2.4 billion they made in financing. Remember... the reason the model T was so cheap and thus sold so well... was because it had NO options. |
