I doubt it. I got a full set for $450 when they were on closeout about 18mos ago.

just being something cost less doesn't mean it's cheap. i've heard only good review on more than half of the tires listed.

I would disagree with this statement. I read that thread and did not come to that consensus. There are wide spread weather conditions of use that does not fit every ones requirement. For example I live in Charlotte, NC and every once in awhile we get some sleet, snow and ice. Lately this winter it has been more frequent. I had the stock summer RFTs on my 135i and I could not get out of the drive way with it. The summer RFTs are very dangerous and not acceptable for a daily driver. So I was forced (since it’s a daily driver) to put on tires that can handle the minimal winter conditions that we occasionally get. So I compromised and put on Conti DWS all seasons. Now they get me through the bad stuff, but certainly can compete with summer tires in performance when the roads are nice.

So the bottom line the summer tires can’t cut it in inclement weather conditions and the all seasons can. But I like higher performance tires for the nice weather situations. Thus, I will get another set of rims with summer performance tires.

To answer the OP question; I would opt for the Hankook Ventus V12 summer performance tires. That is what I think I will be getting for my other rims.

The cheapest decent tires that I've ever used are Nexxens. If I were buying now though I'd get the V12's.

I definitely prefer inexpensive tires when using a staggered, low profile setup like ours. If you pay much for your tires you'll be more prone to using them too long, not changing both sides when damaging one side, etc. Once I find a tire that I like I look for another set cheap on Ebay to have ready as backup.

The original statement was that summers can beat all-seasons in the wet, and that conclusion is borne out in the C&D test that is linked. Your experience is with summer tires in "sleet, snow and ice" which is altogether a different scenario and one in which all-seasons would be expected to outperform summers.

Aren't Yokahama S.Drive tires a pretty popular option?

I think he said they're too rich for his blood but that would be a top choice for me.

I put s-drives on my wifes cooper S, and wouldn't buy them again. Better than the run-flats, but thats about it.
Plus Car and driver seemed pretty thorough in their testing.
Hell, If I can get a tire that performs just as well as a ps2 for almost 1/2 the price, than why not?
