Showroom stock racing has a minimum weight requirement i believe. He left most of the interior there to make weight. Also I believe regulations require there to be a passenger seat too.

It's certainly a compromise race class as opposed to the Prepared and Modified classes. And with the newer product lines, it gets tougher and tougher. They would even allow me to remove the sunroof (and in the US, you could not get one without one). The good news is, after a few years of my making a case to BMW Club Racing that the current stock class rules are a little archaic, it sounds like they are doing away with the old Stock class rules and coming up with a newer rule set that will allow more modifications to the cars. So our compromise of a race car that can already beat quite a lot of the fully prepared race cars will now get even faster.

Scoot,
You have changed something in lubrication / crankcase? Some here are wondering if the N54 engine can handle the turns and stops with lots of G without "planing" *. * : I don't know if my English is good? Planing: I mean the motor oil is not sucked by the pump, due to high acceleration (G). What do you think about this for the 135i ??? |

Ok, good to know. Didn't know that there were rules for stripping the interiour. Well in that case - nice job. Do you have a dry sump system for you racer? I think lubrication might become critical in fast corners when using semislicks or even slicks, especially when having an engine update and a racing suspension.

We do not have a dry sump (I don't think it's legal for stock class), but we do use what we think is a pretty good racing synthetic motor oil in the TOTAL Quartz Racing 10W-50. But we've never had a dry sump on the M3 with the S54 engine either and thankfully, have not blown either one.
We have to use DOT R Compound tires (in our case the Nitto NT-01), so we aren't using slicks. And with the weight of our car, we aren't cornering this car at the speeds some of the cars can corner at. Some BMWs can have fuel starvation at lower fuel tank levels in long, sweeper turns that send the fuel away from the pickup (the e36 had it).

In a lot of race classes, going to a fuel cell is okay, but not in stock class.

New Rules for 2011! BMW Club Racing is changing the Stock class rules to the new Sport Class rules which will allow us coilovers, and a lot of weight reduction. Which means we get to go faster.
So we started the weight reduction project as we removed a bunch of interior and got the sunroof ready to be removed as we convert the car to a hardtop.

Here is the hard top roof skin as it comes from Germany. That piece on the floor in front of it is the roof bow.

Have you gotten the car on a scale lately? Curious as to how much weight youve managed to pull out of it.

If they have scales at either a) HP Autowerks in Santa Barbara when we go up for the radiator upgrade or b) the club races at Chuckwalla in March, we'll see what it weighs with what we've done so far.

Next step on the roof conversion is removing the front and rear glass

Well, the 135i is officially a hard top. The only think left is to put the front and rear glass back in.

Hehe, we're not done yet. Took the 135i on a road trip to old town Santa Barbara to get some goodies from HP Autowerks.
How about a Borla exhaust to save about 30 lbs. And an improved radiator to help keep the water temp lower
