Question about front lip vs splitter

Okay so I'm ordering a front splitter for my 2011 135i and my friend just told me that I needed a front lip to be able to install the splitter? Now he has me confused if I need to get a front lip too, or he's being an idiot lol. Just looking for an answer if a splitter can be installed without buying an aftermarket front lip. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you dont need anything extra to install the splitter and i usually here people use splitter and lip interchangeably.

Your friend doesn't know what he is talking about. The only thing you need to install a splitter is a bumper to mount it to.

Splitters are technically just a flat piece under the bumper to provide downforce. A lip is usually a molded piece to improve the look of the car.

Do you need one to have the other? Not at all.

Typically you can only have one or the other...not both.
