Brake Service Light

What happens if the service light for the brakes comes on, but you still have plenty of brake pad left? I have 5000 miles on my car and have done one DE with it. The service interval for the fronts has dropped down to 4000 miles left, but the pads still have over 75% of the material left. Do the brake sensors trigger the light or is it something else? The reason I ask is I have another DE scheduled in September and I want to be prepared it the light comes on but my pads are still fine. Thanks in advanced for any advice.
