thinking of picking up 135i...limp modes concern me though
I totaled my e46 m3 on the track last month and im thinking of picking up a 135i but all these. Stories of guys have limp modes kicking on while at the track are pushing me away from the 135i.....
I will be tracking 1-2 times a month in open group hpde.... Are these limp modes an easy fix with a radiator and oil coer upgrade or is the n54 just not the best car for a track junkie? Imput would be great thank you |

TBH, coolant temps have yet to be an issue for my car, but oil temps do get really hot (280*F+), no limp modes yet. The N54 is an alright engine for HPDE, but the chassis really isn't great, especially coming from an E46-M3...

Besides the water temp limp modes, there are also the idiotic brake pad limps, which is based on a calculation so there's nothing you can do about it. There is a possible cure with a customized Epic tune, but I don't know if anyone has actually tried it. Anyway, I love my car for street, and it's good enough for track for a low-ambition intermediate driver like me, but the N54 135i is definitely not the best car for a track junkie. |

OP went with a Boss 302 I believe, he is keeping it hidden from me until the next track day so he can kick my ass.

My previous track car was e46m3 too. With suspension mods 135i is faster than e46m3

My car beat X car at the track isn't a good measure of much. You are most likely comparing drivers. I have passed e92 m3's and corvettes, yet have been passed by spec miatas with great drivers... So the spec miata must be the fastest car.... ?
Boss 302 is a solid car out of the box and in my opinion a better starting point than a 135i for track duty. |

There was one at the autobahn this last monday, not sure if it was modded or not. My car is slightly modded. BMW ppk 1, swift springs koni yellows, M3 bits. It wasn't much faster then me. He passed me in one of the middle sessions. I got faster during the last two sessions, never saw him again and i was passing almost everyone towards the end. I'm a low level intermediate driver.

I just finished doing a two day lapping event with BMW Club Quebec at mont tremblant race track and I havent had an issue with limp mode. I was really worried that my chipped 135i was going to have this problem but it didnt.
To prevent overheating, I flushed my coolant with 70/30 mix and a bottle of water wetter. I also installed a BMS oil cooler thermostat bypass, and changed my oil the day before the event. It was really hot and humid during the two track days, and I didnt have to install a aftermarket oil cooler Just thought id share... |

Again many cars with suspension mods can be faster than a e46 m3 |

Equally modded e46 m3 and 135i(coilovers, c.plates, tires, stock engines), 135i wins every single time. Last edited by Groundpilot; 09-06-2013 at 10:52 AM.. |

The point is who cares about "after modifications." I don't know about you but I don't know anyone who buys their next car based on what could be done after they drop a few thousand in mods. I'm more concerned with how it performs from factory as my basis. |

N55 + PPK cooling and I had zero cooling issues at the track a few weeks ago. Oil topped out at around 270, and considering the fact that it runs @ 250 all day long on the street, I didn't think that was too terrible (it'll be changed out in 3k miles).
As others have said, plenty of power but the chassis needs mods for the discerning track driver. Could be done fairly simply, but almost nobody stops at "simple." I've been looking into this mod and that recently, but I honestly think I'll just spring for an E36 M3 with high miles, throw a roll bar in it, and go have a carefree blast not worrying about crunching my beloved daily. That said, the complete stock car was _fun_ because I knew what to expect out of it. However, if I were tracking 1-2 times/month, I would not be looking at an E82.

Drivers and tires. Those are the big difference makers for HPDE folk like us. I could keep up with less powerful cars on r-comps with my runflats, but that was all power and not skill. Higher powered cars with r-comps blew past me; also these were better drivers.

Wow... after picking up my ford I haven't been on the bmw forums that much. . Well ill just throw I n my 2cents on what I found...this doesn't mean what im about to state is 100% accurate or is the same conclusion that other people may come to...lets be honest no 2 cars are the exact same or have the same issues... meaning alot of people I spoke with in regards to the 135i have had the exact same issues but 2 of the things I kept running into is the 135i going into was limp mode having to do with oil cooling Issues...as you read in others responses on this thread some have never had this issue and may never...and I hope they never do..nothing worse is seeing another driver or enthusiast end his day early because of mechanical issues... but alot of shops and local 135 guys I spoke to did have that issue...obviously purchasing oil coolers might just fix it but the other issue or discouraging issue for me was the limitations on tire size and having to deal with understeer. ... now there are 2 ways I could have got around that was to buy a 1m conversion kit but at that point why waste the money and instead just purchase a 335i as the fenders wells on the 335 are much larger to accommodate larger tires but to be honest I dont like the looks of the 335... and then of course alot will say they run quick times with the oem 135 fenders and other's will say any car depending on how its driven could have understeer.. so with that said I just decided to go with a different platform. .
