Autocar's recently released their print version of their BMW 1M vs. Cayman R comparison in their magazine, and now here's the video version. The video is below for your enjoyment, but here's some notable excerpts from their magazine review:

Quote:
In an impromtu side by side comparison starting at 1500 rpm it left the Porsche for dead. By the time the BMW limiter arrived it had opened up a 70/80 metre gap. And when we tried in fourth, fifth and sixth the gap grew wider'

'The amazing thing though is that the BMW can stay with the Cayman R across the Scottish highlands. It can live with the Porsche because it handles, rides, steers and stops just how an M car should'

'The Im pulls like a mad dog from pretty much any engine speed'

They just give the nod to the Cayman R but it's so close. 'To quote It's a heck of a lot of car for the money the 1M'

interesting. I think the 1M def looks a lot better then the porsche imo and i was glad to hear it was faster? did i hear that right? either way i think the 1m had a lot of critics at first but i believe its def building up a fan base now

I think the 1M is just fine. Haven't driven it so can't really say anything, but i think it looks more aggressive than the Cayman R, which probably would be better if was in black

not exactly a fair comparison since the Cayman R is 12,000 pounds (~$20,000) more than the 1 series..

if you go to the Porsche US site it shows that Cayman R is about $12000 more than the 1M, not the $20,000 you showed. Keep in mind no one from the US or AUS goes to UK to buy their cars

But I agree, a more fair comparo is Cayman or Cayman S - I think Cayman S has been compared with it if I remember correctly and 1M came on top overall (considering also the price difference)

I think the problem is, both 1M and Cayman R are the latest cars, so people want to use them in their comparison, even though it doesn't make any sense to do so.

well it is and isn't a fair comparison since the type of person that is going to buy a 1M is going to either consider purchasing a cayman r or will compare the car's statistics to a cayman r.

the porsche is a better drivers car. but its also a 2 seater, where as the 1m has a rear seat and a proper boot. so the advantage is unfair.

they are aimed at 2 different people, so that makes it an unfair comparison, but thats what the BMW M line has always gone up against and its successes are what make it great, but more recently, the successes have been too far and too few.

there was a time when the E39 M5 was compared to the 996 Porsche Turbo

if you compare the e92 m3 to the benchmark in automobiles - the GT3 - the m3 just gets spanked over and over. too many compromises.

whats a shame is that bmw has fallen so hard compared to its rivals who keep pumping out more and more focused cars

The Cayman is an amazing machine but personally I bought a Z4M Coupe over a Cayman S because it was more raw and scrappy. I like that you have to drive it angry to get the most out of it. When I get back in a Cayman after driving my M they feel like a sewing machine. They definitely are more precise but I feel a little bored.

And keep in mind not everyone is a Yank or an Aussie. The world's a big place (no matter what people from those two places think).

Well,
for practicality the 1M is probably a better car.
For track, I dont think 1M can touch the Cayman R.

Look is subjective.
In my eyes, the 1M is so unproportional & it will look boring & dated in 10 years.

But the curves of the Porsche is timeless.

To me, the 1M takes home the title Best bang for the buck.
However, lets hope the 1M's N54 engine doesnt suffer from HPFP.

Between the 2, I rather have the Porsche Cayman R. or even the Cayman S.

Not sure what you’re looking at. Base MSRP with destination charge for CR is $67,250. Base MSRP with destination charge for 1M is $47,010. That’s more than $20K difference. The CR doesn’t even come with xenon headlights, A/C, and radio as standard equipment. When you add those in as options on the CR, the difference will be at least $23K. When I spec a CR that is comparable to the 1M in features, options, and accessories that I’m looking for, the price difference comes out to be at least $27K more for the CR.

I stand corrected. I was looking at Cayman S, starts at $62,000 US

Agree...most of us spent <10% of our driving time on the track. This is why the 1M and M3 are such great cars. Fantastic daily driver and competitive on weekend track days.

The reviewer in the video said the Cayman was 12,000 pounds more. I was using his figures. That's all been addressed anyway.

I would disagree with you on your second point as well. People DO travel to Europe to get their new vehicles though. Many people on this forum traveled to Germany to pick up their cars, myself included. Auto manufacturing has fizzled in the UK so it doesn't occur as often plus that whole driving on the other side of the road thing..

Well done BMW! When you consider the 1M has a back seat (albeit a bit cramped), a decent trunk, and is $12,000 (according to BMW and Porsche USA websites) cheaper I think the 1M is an awesome car for the money.

Originally I had thought when I decided to replace my 135 I'd go straight for a CPO E9X M3, but the 1M has me rethinking that.

I was in the same boat ultimately ordered the 1M. New, warranty, exclusive, fast, etc, etc.

For me, the only plus in the M3s favour was the sound. Not worth 20k.
