LSD Advice

Hi Guys,

After owning two cars with an LSD i really want to put one in my 2008 135i, does anyone have any advice and rough costs associated?

also looking into the same idea, and doing some research, the 135 diffs are welded, so machining is required, quaife installs are the most common, and i think advan performance and southern bm do these conversions, and i think they are about between 3.5-4k exchange. im sure others can confirm.

I'm pretty sure if you car is a 6AT, the diff is not welded.

i think that is only for some 335 diffs, auto diffs are also smaller than manual diffs.

Quaife, wavetrac - common

however there's a newer option that does full exchanges for all of $1k or $1.5k or something, really good price, in any ratio you want as far as i recall.. can't remember the name

and given the cost of the quaife/wavetrac, it's about the same price to get an M3 rear subframe+diff too, and get a better LSD out of it.

there's also the way more expensive options like drexler and OSG for clutch LSD's

and the much cheaper KAAZ clutched one (nothing that LISTS it fits, but it's the same pumpkin etc. size)

I bought a complete pumpkin from the US with a Wavetrac installed. They took the diff out of a wrecked 135i, installed the Wavetrac and shipped it over ready to bolt in.
Cost $3,500 all up. I am sure there are cheaper ways to go about it.

What is the wavetrac like? Do you know the model number? I might pick one of them up and install it through a friends workshop.

I've had a bolted Wavetrac for about 3 years. No issues and no noises. It's a lot of fun.

Hopefully I will have my large pumpkin bolted MT diff to sell in a month or so for anyone who is looking for a cheap upgrade (the large pumpkin diffs are much stronger)

Basically you buy my bolted diff, buy yourself a bolted diff centre (M Factory/Wavetrac etc) install into my pumpkin and swap you old welded diff out for my large pumpkin diff with lsd centre

I purchased from Harold at HPA. He is very knowledgable in suspension and has first hand experience with the e82 platform.

I payed around $1300 delivered. $500 for installation and another $100 or so for 2 bottles of recommended redline fluid. Total just under 2k.

Auto $2500 inc gst

Manual $4300 inc gst.

Option - Use a E92 bolted type auto 3.46 complete diff, fit the LSD unit, mod the drive shaft for rubber coupling type, and good to go for $3600.00 or without drive shaft mods $3150.00 inc gst for CV type drive shaft.

Option M3 complete rear end $5,500 - $6,500 BEST

As with a few others on this forum Advan has installed a complete E92 M3 V8 rear end including sub-frame with diff with 3.85 ratio into my 135. Some minor mods sees the serious punter with the muts nuts rear end, especially when combined with coil-overs and big brakes.

Its around twice the price of a Quaife conversion depending on manual or auto but am assured by others who have already completed theirs that its a fantastic result. I have had a Quaife for 2 years of driving and loved it.

Only task requires sourcing low km E92 M3 parts at a fair price.

About a month ago, I sourced a pristine large housing pumpkin with bolted ring gear, and 3.46 Final drive ratio at an auto recycler in Florida. I had it ship for free to Harold at HP Autowerks in California. He converted it to a Quaife, and shipped it out to me in Quebec, Canada.

I replaced my large housing pumpkin 3.08 Final drive (open diff), with the unit from HPA. I sold my original large housing pumpkin with welded ring gear, and 3.08 Final drive to a local guy.

I bought 12x fresh half shafts bolts and 2x liters of Redline 75W140NS fluid.

Total cost in parts labor, shipping, and savings by selling my old pumpkin, was around $2500CAD.

Love the Quaife LSD diff on the streets. The rear end just digs into the ground and the car takes off like a rocket now - no more tendency to kick out sideways when accelerating hard in a straight line.

The DSC light hardly comes on anymore even on cold pavement. Putting down power through both wheels, and the higher final drive makes my 135i even more exhilarating. There is a bump of 500RPM on the highway, and a slight increase in fuel consumption, but this is a such minor inconvenience for the benefits provided by the LSD...

I will be taking my 135i out to the track in two weeks, and the new LSD diff should help put the power down out of curves...

I brought the wavetrak second hand from Advan Performance and been loving it from day one, drive out of corners unbelievable compared to stock.

No noises, no problems.

For those considering Quaife, consider taking your best quote (unit + taxes + shipping) in AUD to your local Quaife guys- SouthernBM or Advan- prior to parallel importing. SBM came within a few % of the import price when pricing has been discussed in the past.

Personally I need to look at a Quaife or KAAZ before winter. Quaife is preferable from a maintenance perspective although I know a KAAZ will do what I want it to do.
