123D COMING TO US!!!
I don't know if someone already posted this but...
I went to a dealership in Phoenix and had asked about the 135i and how many preorders had been made. The dealer told me that next year BMW will be releasing a 123D to the U.S. It will be offered in hatchback form. |

I'm surprised that BMW would bring the hatch to the States, seeing that hatches have never done very well there. That was one of the main reasons why the 1 coupe was developed.

Sounds very unlikely to me. If the 123d is coming, it certainly won't be coming in hatch form.

It's a very fluid energy market what with new govt standards being passed...
If BMW does bring the 1-er diesel it'd be great- but More of a wish than an immediate reality. And as for bringing in the hatch...bad timing for a model that's been around for awhile...aside from the fact that the US is notorious for rejecting hatches, the coupe and cab are just getting off the ground in the N/A market....nope. What we'll much more likely see next in the N/A market is the X1: now zipping around Munich in heavy camo. Recent pic of the X1 in camo fat suit/WCF |

The 1-series hatchback might be the ugliest car I've ever seen in my life. If they bring that turd to the US, it's gonna make my sweet 135 coupe look like a turd. A big, brown turd.....

They'll likely sell X series diesels first, see how they sell, then probably the 5 series, maybe the 3.
BMW has to have every car/motor combination approved to be sold in the US (including government crash testing and documentation processes), which costs millions. They would need to be able to recoup those dollars. I don't think a 1 series with a diesel makes good financial success right now, and can't imagine BMW would think so either. |

I concur that the first diesel will more than likely be the X1 than the 123D hatchback. BMW has gone on records during the 1 series official release and said the US market doesn't perform well with hatchbacks.
I haven't heard anything official about the 335D being bought over, but that is good news indeed. However, I would love to have the 123D over the 335D. How much of a price difference is the 335D over the 335i coupe in Europe? Is the 335D cheaper or more expensive than the 335i coupe there? |

The Roundel article touches on the marketing machine that's driving this decision, and it comes down to the fact that BMW wants to be a pure performance-oriented brand in the USA. The 335d produces 285 horsepower and 427 ft-lbs of torque, so I'd say it fits the bill nicely.

BMW has already announced they will be bringing deisels to the NA market in the second half of 2008. I dont see the X1 beeing ready by the second half of 2008 so I dont think it will be the first.

?? Escort, Mustang(SVO), Firebird and Camaro didn't do well...? Thats what missing is the 2-door utility sportscar.. I wish Ford would bring back a re-freshened verson of the Merkur XR4ti for example. You wouldn't even have to change the body... just put an efficient 310hp engine in it and a european interior.$40k the car will sell all day long! |

I have my serious doubts about this news until it gets something more official than a dealer in Pheonix.
But BMW woud be very smart to roll out the 123d at the same time as the rest of their diesels. BMW can use the awesome 45+ mpg of the 123d to drive attention to the entire line of diesel vehicles, then upsell like crazy to 335d's that still get good gas milage, just not 45+ mpg. At the same time, they play the other end of the diesel market by showing how powerful and fast the 335d diesel engine is. By playing both ends of the market using two different cars, BMW can push massive power/speed at the same time as pushing awesome hybrid-like fuel efficiency. This would be a very smart and effective ad campaign. Highlight the 335d performance and 123d efficiency and tie them together. Having a high gas milage car, like Toyota has in the Prius, is a strong positive marketing tool that can be used as a draw for the entire brand name. Oh, and the 123d 3-door hatch does 0-60 in 6.7 seconds. (slightly quicker than the coupe) It also is lighter than the 123d coupe, which is already 144 lb lighter than the 135i. Chip tune it, and this will be one fun little car! |
