Intake Valves at 40k miles! Pictures inside
So today I took up a project of tapping the intake manifold and adding a brass 1/4 nipple for my Tial Bov. (I have fluttering at low boost)
Once I removed the intake manifold I took a look at my intake valves. To my surprise I saw the following... I will be setting an appointment next week to get walnut blasted. For what its worth, my car has 40,1xx miles. All the valves looked like this... however this was the best picture I was able to take. |

Yup nothing out of the norm, mine was done at 37K and it was just as bad. Small price to pay to own such an amazing engine. Amirite

The charge pipe doesn't get in the way of the intake cleaning. I cleaned my valves with the charge pipe in place. To get to the intake valves, you remove the air filter housing and the intake manifold. The air filter housing needs to be removed to get to the charge pipe, so not a bad idea to change the charge pipe with the air filter housing out of the way. It's also a good opportunity to throw in some cone air filter(s).

I'ts the mani that needs to be lifted to get to the exposed valves.
This looks totally normal for 40K of driving. Such is DI....

A couple of years ago the dealer was promoting the Techron additive to help with the cleaning of the injectors and valves. Of course, the photos they show are exaggerated. I usually put the Techron additive in all my cars every 3000 miles. Does this additive bring any benefit or is it just crap?

My car threw a code at 43k. Valves were blasted, no more code. My independent BMW shop recommends every 15 - 30K for induction cleaning on DI turbo cars.

I'm only at 15k miles at the moment so still got a while to go but I've seen a lot of posts about walnut blasting and don't know much about it. I haven't heard many people talk about this in the UK forums so not sure if it's offered here.
Do BMW offer a similar/alternative way of cleaning/servicing the intake valves and manifold officially?

Mine were done three weeks ago at 43,000. Looked exactly like the OP's.
I was quoted 750 at the dealer and the Indy did it for 300. Car is much smoother now, especially at load in high gear. |
