BMW performance SSK vs M-Pack shifter ...
Hey i have a 135i with m-sport package and i'm wondering if there is a big difference between the m-sport shifter and the short shifter from BMW performance ... ??? Is the ssk really faster at shifting ?
tks !

Yes, there is a significant difference. You still can't rush the gearbox and abuse it by trying to perform lightning shifts, but I found that it feels a LOT better.
The action is so much more crisp and less rubbery than stock.

It should be noted that if you have a 2011 your throws are already shorter than a 2008-2010 135i equipped with a 6 speed. I personally think the money is better spent on sway bars or something that will make a more significant difference (i still haven't decided if I'm going to get an intake since I live in FL).

I just had my SSK installed this morning. Huge (ok, maybe not quite $400) difference in the shifting! Now, the shifter has a nice snick-snick feel, and you don't have to stretch to get into six gear anymore. BMW of Alexandria did the install in less than 2 hours, gave me a labor discount for the BMWCCA, and the bill came to $208 and change. The SSK was purchased from getbmwparts.com, $225 (no shipping as I picked it up in person) and I sold the knob and boot for $80 and $40 respectively. So, in all, I think I came out pretty well! Very happy with this mod!

I also had the Performacne SSK installed in my 135i. It is really a NICE mod. very short throws and nice feel. Now I find myself shifting more just to feel the snick, snick action to the shifter now. Btw... I measured the before and after throws on my car. Before it took 80mm's going from 1st to 2nd gears. Now it takes 55mm's. That doesn't sound like that much... but it is a HUGE differernce in shfting.

Even IF you look at RealOEM... when BMW said the 1M has an all new lighter trans(and dry sump)... I think that is BS... bc the part numbers say it is the very same tranny as before(135i). It is also used in the Z4 35is and 335is - too. So... we shall see. Last edited by Dackelone; 04-25-2011 at 08:15 PM.. |

The 1M transmission is supposed to be based on the N55 6mt transmission, which is different from the one found in 2010 and older models. |

ok, it looks like you are right. Sorry. But I thought some guys with the N55 6MT had installed the Perf SSK ? Maybe not. ???
What still strikes me as odd is that BMW said the 1M uses a new lightweigh and dry sump 6MT trans. When clearly it uses the SAME trans as the N55 135i does. www.realoem.com 2008 135i 6MT trans part #23007581860 Rmfd-6 speed gearbox GS6-53BZ - TJGK 2009 135i 6MT trans part #23007581860 Rmfd-6 speed gearbox GS6-53BZ - TJGK 2010 135i 6MT trans part #23007581860 Rmfd-6 speed gearbox GS6-53BZ - TJGK 2011 135i 6MT trans part #23007599342 Rmfd-6 speed gearbox GS6-45BZ - THD4 2012 135i 6MT trans part #23007599342 Rmfd-6 speed gearbox GS6-45BZ - THD4 2011 1M 6MT trans part #23007599342 Rmfd-6 speed gearbox GS6-45BZ - THD4 Last edited by Dackelone; 04-25-2011 at 07:28 PM.. |

BMW does not make a ssk for the 2011 cars. If anyone attempted to install one and whether the person was successful is beyond my knowledge.

Just looked up the gear shift linkage on RealOEM... since you got me thinking...
The parts are different from N54 to N55 6MT cars. But the 1M uses the same gear shift parts as the N55 6MT. Hummm... N54 shift lever #25117581806 N54 shift arm #25117524720 N55 shift lever #25117605482 N55 shift arm #25117590609 1M N54T shift lever #25117605482 N54T shift arm #25117590609 |

Do it, you won't regret it. Very short throws, easy to drive and makes for some very quick shifts. Gear selection seems more precise aswell. Well worth the $$.

Yup! Therefore 1M uses the N55 transmission as I stated previously - which also means that the existing ssk made by BMW will not fit the 1M unless they fabricate one for the newer transmission.

The shifter arm is what is different - I think. I know on my car it says N54 on that shifter arm part. Dackel |

Do you have a 135i ? Or a 128i ? The SSK parts ARE different! For a 128i you don't need the shifter arm (the part stamoed N54 in my pic above) Here are the part numbers for all the Perf SSK w/o the shifter knob and bag for my 135i N54: 25110434218 shifter arm 121 euros 25111220600 plastic bearing 6.50 euros 25110434217 shifter lever 55 euros 25117571899 clips (you need two!) 039 cents each I had to have my exhaust mid pipes dropped to install the SSK, so I also needed the mid pipe exhaust gaskets (two) 18307553603 exh gaskets 10 euros each. I had my BMW dealer do the install mainly bc they only charged me one hour's labor. I thought that was really fair price for the install. Dackel |
