Brake pad life indication.

On my BT scan tool there is an option to view brake pad life. This means there must be some sensor that measures, probably brake pad thickness (a simple distance measurement perhaps, i dont know).

I am going to replace my pads soon with cool carbons. Is there anything I need to know beforehand when replacing the pads regarding this indicator? Do I have to purge the lines when changing pads or not? On all other brake jobs I've done I would purge the lines. Not sure if I should do it for the 135.

Thanks

the pads have a wear sensor that attaches to the top of the pads(for both front and rear) you will have to reinstall the sensor into the cool carbon pads, you might damage it well removing it so it might be a good idea to just buy a new one. you do not have to purge the line if your just changing the pads.

Correct I believe.

The BT tool could only read whether or not the brake pad sensors were worn to the point they trigger the brake light.

And the brake pads sit outside of the brake hydraulic system so therefore no need to purge.

Then how do I contract the pistons farther back after I install newer pads that are now thicker? I wont be able to get the pads wrapped around the disk if I cant move the pistons back into the caliper. Which is why I asked if I should loosen the purge nipple to press the pistons back and allow room for the thicker pads.

How hard is it to remove? What tools and process is involved? Is it press fit or something? I would like to know before I begin install, I dont want suprises.

Use a C-Clamp to push the brake piston in if necessary to clear the new thicker pads.

I usually do this, but dont I have to release the pressure from the other side, from somewhere? nipple?

I've never had to do that. The piston compresses against the hydraulics of the entire system which is not much pressure overall so no need for a 'pressure relief' valve opening....

Thanks for the tips dude. You've been really helpful.

Plug on one side, clip on the other. Just use needle nose on the clip right where you'd imagine you would from this picture, squeeze and pull....
