Interesting wrench options --- 11mm

From Sears:

Do you think any of these would be better than the Hazlet or is 5 degrees too big?

I'm thinking 12 point is 360/12 or 30 degrees... would 5 degrees be 6 times better?

Maybe this video will help those who run into bleeding issues when trying to bleed the clutch system.

I just used my standard open ended 11mm wrench. Used the open side since I had the tube sticking out of it. No fancy turns or curves or anything needed. Just give it a few degrees, flip it, give it a few more degrees, etc. Nothing to it. This is a 2011 135i w/ N55 if that matters at all. I suppose a different wrench would be a little quicker but I'd have maybe saved 30 seconds. Maybe I got lucky? For my application, nothing special was needed whatsoever.

No idea on before / after feel. I got it apart, put the new one in, and then realized that the one I pulled out was already modded. Previous owner did it and either forgot to mention it or I forgot that he did. LOL. That would explain why I didn't know why everyone hated the stock clutch!

About the bleeding, I can't think of any way to do it "right" that guarantees no air in it. To me, doing it right means bleeding it. Even if you put the ends together slowly and allow a little fluid to come out to minimize the air. I think you can definitely get away without bleeding it, you may not have enough air to cause problems or notice it. But I still wouldn't call that the right way to do it.

Thumbs up

Did this mod tonight on my 2011 135i M-sport. Ran into minor issue with pressure bleeding. Only used air initially, as reservoir "looked full". Wound up bleeding fluid, bubbles, and then air in that specific sequence. Clutch pedal went to the floor without any resistance. Undid the bleeder, filled the reservoir up to the rim, put about a cup of fresh fluid in the bleeder, pumped it up to 20 psi, bled again but with short bursts, until no more bubbles appeared in the clear tubing and catch bottle. Pedal firmed up immediately, and I was good to go.

Wow, this is what a fast clutch engagement feals like - never experienced this in a BMW, and I owned 5 of them before my 135i. I also installed clutch stop. Got to get used to the new dynamics. So little pdeal throw is needed now, and so easy to shift smoothly and promptly in gears 1-2-3. Rev matching is also smoother and easier.

As a previous poster mentioned, the standard 11mm wrench and some patience (taking 1/4 turns, and flipping the wrnech) is all you need to crack the bleed valve - no fancy half moon or angled wrench to buy for this task.

Great mod, and I highly recommend it.

I really want to do this, but I've got < 3K miles on the car and if I break it (I'd have it done at an indie) this early somehow I'm going to be really pissed. *torn*

just bought my 2011 135i less than a month ago, and it is still under warranty. With all the great DIY's out there, and especially this one, I felt confident. If you ever tackled a did brake job or brake bleed before, this CDV replacement job is way simpler.

I freaking love that folks are still utilizing this DIY 5.5 years after I wrote it. Too cool.

If one were to attempt to learn English as a second language from this forum, one would conclude that the word "performance" when attached to a modification meant "change for the sake of change". That is not a bad thing, because if that were not so this forum would be long cold and there wouldn't be a fraternity tinkering with their cars for the joy of tinkering.

I have to say that I miss the passing of Larryn from this forum. He provided a lot of wisdom and he was motivated by actual performance, tested at the track and at the autoslalom. With respect to this mod though, I suspect it is better only because it is different.

Question: with the CDV installed how fast does one need to release the clutch before the slave cylinder can't track the pedal movement any more?

Arthur1920 is saying "the king has no clothes". He is wrong about hill hold though - greatest thing since sliced bread!

Great thing about this forum - we get to disagree about things.

Of course I will agree that your version of the CDV delete is the best. If I get bored and decide to try it, I will do it your way.
So thousands have done this and have noticed a positive difference, yet you'll debate it without even having tried it yourself.

Actually, both Autozone and WalMart carry this OTC DOT4 brake fluid that comes in a small (.3L) yellow bottle with impressive dry/wet boiling points for about $4. Can't recall the brand off the top of my head, just look for the yellow bottle, make sure it'd DOT4, and you're golden.

Also, for everyone's reference, I made a small write up about my experiences, check it out if you'd like:

Hey Dack,
Did you actually change this out? Sounds like a good, necessary mod.

Yes, I did. I HIGHLY recommend deleting the CDV on a manual transmission.

Anyone in Chicago that has done this/willing to help me get this done?

Everything seems straight forward except for the bleeding of the clutch...never done that before.
