128i Xenon headlight projector issue. Please help

I recently purchased OEM headlight projectors and when I plug them in only the halo lights come on. I havent physically installed the lights yet. ( plugged them in first to make sure they work.) any idea why the low beam and high beam wont come on??

do they headlights need to be physically installed? do they have to be grounded?

Please help!

you need full BMW retrofit kit from UK spec, or the collection of parts and FRM3 footwell module

OR go cheap wth after market HID kit for halogen H7 to HID for blasts etc.
Once the HID bulbs connected, you can leave the Vertical leveling and side to side leveling disabled.

Big big list of parts and wiring/coding needed to be done in order to have properly working OEM xenons, which IMO is much more worth your time and money than going with those ugly depos or spyder headlights lol.
I did the whole retrofit without the BMW kit, so all wiring is custom. You do however 100% NEED the FRM3 "MAX" module, the headlights will not function with any other module even if it is a "xenon" module.

Hehe.. That's what I thought also until I wasted $200 buying one that never worked with the retrofit process.

Nope, the "BASIS" ones are for halogens, you need one that says "MAX".

You need:

63130443694 - Adaptive xenon installation kit (I guess you've got all the bulbs and ballast so not everything from this kit)

61319169400 - new switch light (not necessarily)

Footwell module (aka FRM) 2 or 3, I don't know exactly. There is quite a lot of them, for cars with or without the adaptive headlight functions and so on.

In Europe headlight washer system is mandatory but in the US I think it was part of the Cold pkg so you don't need it.

Also you need coding cables and programs or find someone experienced.

I have all the necessary bulbs, and ballast. I have been calling shops around LA.

My goal in this install is to get all the parts and go to a shop that has done it before that also owns the BMW computer so that they could do the install and the software flash/upgrade.

You have AHL xenons, you need a FRM2/FRM3 AHL one. XE is for non-AHL lights if I remember. The main difference between FRM2 and FRM3 is that the newer one has got the "welcome lights" feature.

From the kit you need everything except the things you have got already (which I believe is the control unit and the D1S bulb). It contains all the important parts.

he claimes that he has done this process before where the coding will take care of the xenons to come on. meaning- no harnes or rewiring will be needed. his software coding will take care of it.

The safest option is always the dealer, you could get the parts from here and then take the car to the guy you've found... Or you can ask in the local LA forums if anyone knows good coders. I live more than 10 hours by plane from California, I can't help you with that now.

Ok, just to clear it up.
The reason you NEED FRM3 not FRM2 is because you can't code the "Xenon headlight retrofit" on the FRM2, it can only be done on the FRM3. For my retrofit I did all necessary wiring ready for the coding, but the coding would never work with the FRM2. I then bought the FRM3 and everything worked like it was supposed to.

You don't need a new headlight switch, I still have my original halogen one and it works like normal.

You don't need headlight washers, they're pointless and ugly.

I didn't even bother getting the auto-levelling since you can manually adjust the low beam height.

So with that being said, if your soul purpose is ONLY to have working headlights - all you need is wiring, FRM3 MAX and coding.

Did you get the retrofit harness or did you manually rewire your harness?
how do you manually adjust the low beam level?

I didn't get the OEM retrofit loom, all my wiring is custom. Since you got the retrofit kit, it really shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to complete the retrofit.

And here's the wheel you can turn to adjust the height of low beam (clockwise to lower, counter-clockwise to heighten), you can just use a flat head or phillips head. It's located on the back/top of the headlight.
