Looks like you are the exception that proves the rule Way

I also love great watches, but I'm making do with a Seiko Kinetic until my holiday
WAY is weird. Seiko automatic does not have good mechanics though... according to my watch loving work mate. If you spend more you can get Omega. Even Tag automatic is not rated good by him. Tudor is also good apparently, but I lost interest after seeing all the above prices. Casio for me!

most of the swiss automatic watches have the same movement in them made by Swatch. there are about 4 major movement manufacturers in switzerland that all the brands get their movements from.

so your really only buying the look and the name which is fine by me as i love watches but some brands are extremely over priced,

no offence, but your workmate is more than a bit mis-informed.... Tudor and Tag Heuer use basically the same movements. Tudor is basically Rolex cases with an ETA movement in it - the same movements as Tag Heuer generally uses. Even most of Omega's movements are based on ETA's (with a couple of exceptions).
Seiko's automatic movements are regarded as some of the most bulletproof movements out there too..

in house movements are where it's at

definately seiko has what could be the best with the spring drive, movement is so smooth the second hand glides. its just that they are about 6k which is too much right now.

This. Also, the ETA movements are actually known for their reliability and ease of service. Also, just because something is "in house" doesn't mean that it's necessarily better - although they tend to be better because the cost of the movement is many many times more than the "equivalent" ETA movement.

Guy I used to work with has a Patek Philippe perpetual calendar. The servicing costs were something near $5,000 as he had to get it sent back to Switzerland since there was nobody in Australia who could do it.

Worst I've been stung with is $800 for my JLC.
