from what i've heard...no way that sound is synthesized....those burbles and cracks sound totally organic!

if you've heard a synthesized exhaust note, you will noticed they lack the randomness and organic crackling...

Ya, it's definitely not synthesized. The M135 and a few other newer generation ones have the engine sound playing through the speakers. I can guarantee you ours doesn't have anything like that. The engine sound is just engine + exhaust + right foot.

I believe the 2-series will have that though.

I tried revving the car with the stereo on and off and I did not hear anything from the speakers.

Well, technically I believe the crackling and popping _is_ synthetic in that it is tuned into the engine and not _really_ as a result of fuel over-run, as it was on muscle cars. So if you believe the Matrix is fake (computer program), then it stands to reason so is our burbling exhaust. It IS the exhaust, though, making the sounds, unlike the speaker sounds of the M135i.

If you pay close enough attention you will notice the exhaust burbles the exact same # of times each time and at specific RPM ranges. It is not truly an "organic" noise each time because each time it is exactly the same. MINI did this on their Cooper S's starting in '05. People brought them back to the dealership saying the exhaust was broken.

well most 'tuned' exhausts have that kind of predictability....THAT is still ok. 'synthetic', however as you mentioned---is a whole different story!! that's all piped in sound, through speakers and amplifiers! I'm glad we don't have that!

Yes I'm with you - the predictable exhaust still makes me drive with the windows down whenever possible.

Ya, we need some pics of a record number of IS's in one place. I think the most we've ever seen is two together, aside from at a dealer of course.

The greatest picture ever would be of one IS in every color, though I know that'll never happen.

I think Einser M's picture of 24 1Ms from 2011 takes the cake. I'd kill to see something similar for IS's.

Here are some pics of the 1 contingent - 3 135is-es, 1 135i (N54) and one VR 128i. The is-es are Space, Deep Sea and Jet. N54 is Lemans.









And I learned something about my car thanks to Robin! Apparently I am not supposed to have the extra detachable cup-holder since my car doesn't have NAV, but since my allocation was probably a NAV car that was modified to delete it, it's in there. So I get 3 cup-holders and no NAV. NOW it's rare! heheeh

Got the call on Monday that my new, special IS plates were in, and was finally able to pick them up this morning. I used to have 1FA KND on my 2008 135i, which I could have put on my new one, but since that one was pretty much destroyed in a car accident, figured I'd get a special IS-related plate that works on several levels.

They look pretty good, very colorful (for me) and might be a bit too much space in the middle, as I could have gone with a half space, but didn't want writing over the whale tail. Anyways, enjoy! Now I have to figure out if, and when I want to put the plates on the car. Hmm. I always feel like the minute you put them on, the car is no longer "new."

And glad to finally see her Bama! Looks great. What do you think so far of the Carbon Black? It's such an intriguing and dynamic color. You can hardly even see the blue in it except in your last pic or two. At times it'll look jet black, and then at the right angle in the sun, it really shows off the blue in it.

I imagine you'll have some interesting feedback too between your two cars. I wonder if after living with it for a bit it'll inspire you or make you itch to put the PE on the convertible as well (assuming it doesn't have it of course).
