6mt trans oil

For every post i find, i find a different type of fluid. I see ATF then i see 75w/85. Can some one please tell me how much and what type of fluid to use. I really appreciate the education guys. Since we are on fluids what do we use for clutch fluid. Thanks in advance. You guys kick a$$.

I used 2 Litres of the Redline D4 Fluid. Some people use D6 I think, but according to the redline website I used D4.

When I go into the application guide and put in my 2009 128i N51, it says D4

You need a little over two liters of trans fluid for a six speed manual.

Factory fill is MTF-LT-3. Then it went to MTF-LT-4. It might even be now LT-5 like the 1M and N55's use.

I used Red Line's at ATF-D4 in my manual trans and I really like it. The shifter seems smoother to me now.

D4 or d6 that is the question. I guess d6 is a little heavier.

Different transmissions in the 135 and 128, D6 for the 135 and D4 for the 128.

As I said in the DIY, I used Redline MTL. It is a bit thicker than automatic transmission fluid but much thinner than rear end fluid. I live in a warm climate and garage my bimmer so I don't think it is too thick.

The clutch reservoir is part of the brake reservoir and uses whatever brake fluid you have in there. It has slightly separate chamber in there that occupies the final 1/5 of the container that will protect all the brake fluid from draining out should there be an issue with the clutch slave cylinder leaking fluid out.

Is it possible to buy not from the dealer?

I am not sure who makes it. I think it is made by: Pentosin


But I found this ZF document(bellow) and it looks like Castrol does make it as well. But also Pentosin does so too. So I am not sure.

I know for MTF-LT-5 (the fluid used in the 1M and also 135is w/N55 trans), you can use the Porsche DKG (DCT) fluid made by Pentosin. So I think maybe Pentosin makes it for Castrol ? Or maybe they both make equivalent fluids. ?

You can find some places online that sell the MTF fluids... but it seems like all of them just buy it from BMW AG so why not just save yourself the markup and buy it direct! Some dealers sell it by the 500ml and some only in a 5L jug. My dealer sold it to me by the 500ml and put it in a 5L trans jug for me. You will need 2.1L for the manual trans fluid change. But really, I would use Red Line's AFT-D4 or D6(thinner than D4) in your manual trans. My trans shifts so much smoother with the Red Line ATF.

I forgot how much I paid per 500ml for the MTF-LT4 fluid from my bmw dealer. It wasn't cheap! I think close to 75 euros for the 2.5L I bought from them. Buy the Red Line for $15 per liter!

I bought my Castrol SAF-XJ 75w140 GL5, diff oil from an OEM German parts store. 9 euros per 500ml. The 135i diff holds 1.2L.

Thank You so much Dack will see for redline ATF though I am little worry about cold winters will Redline be alright for -30 -25 degrees?

You can look on www.bobistheoilguy.com website for MTF-LT-3 oil specs vs Redline's D4.

IF your car sits outside... I would use the Redline ATF-D6 since its thinner (than the D4) and should be better at super low outside temps.

For the diff fluid... you could also use Redline's 75/90 GL5 gear oil.

Strongly considering switching from this lifetime fluid. I had full control over all the fluids in my last car (did ALL maintenance and service myself) and have been lazy with the free maintenance with the 1er, but I absolutely do not trust that tranny fluid is good for the life of the car. No way. Bullshit.

Are there any color differences with the fluids from the BMW MTF and the Redline?

who has experience using Motul fluid for there tranny or diff? I am switching to there engine oil as it seems to get good reviews. I know a lot of racers that use it. Would like to see some supporting data that it is > than Redline.

WOW. Even worse than the Honda MTF that I was used to working with. I wonder of its worth changing the diff fluid as well. That will be a PITA with no drain hole.
