WTF? Civic Si outhandles Mini & 330i

Last time I checked, the Mini did 67.6 and the 330i did 66.4 in the slalom. The new Civic Si is pulling 68.0... That's pretty impressive for a $20K car built on my RSX-S's platform.

Edmunds Civic Si Review

I still want a 330i though... More comfy...

it's cheap, and looks/feels cheap

I for one wouldn't consider it even if it slalomed at 73 mph (boxster territory)

I really really like the new Si, it's such fantastic value for money. I won't hesitate to say that I'm a big fan of Honda engineering, that will last no matter what car I drive. I'm a car enthusiast, therefore as long as it's a good car, it will excite me and get my curiosity up regardless of the badge it wears.

Good job for Honda to keep the cost under 20k, but I personally would rather buy the RSX-S even though it's almost the end of the generation, it's more of a personal preferrence because I like the RSX's looks better and I gotta have leather.

I may be dating myself, but there are too many things going on with the new Civic interiors IMHO.

As well, take good heed of the Edmunds advisory-the engine may get on your nerves. Those engine can sream all the way to 8,000 rpm, the problem is unless that is exactly what you do to it all the time-you're just driving another Civic. And I don't like cars that need (not can) to rev high to deliver performance, and fall flat at lower rpms.

Exactly. Honda delivers on high RPM only. Also, Honda has one of most unrealiable gearboxes and doesn't provide any parts after 6 years.

I've always wondered what slalom numbers show. What is it exactly? Anyone can explain?

How fast it can weave through cones placed an equal distance apart. The faster the car can go through the cones, the better it handles. Of course, the Si is a much smaller car than the BMW. I would expect a 1 series to outhanle the Si in the slalom.

"Honda delivers on high RPM only"
thats cause you're only looking at the 4cylinder engines, look at their v6

"Also, Honda has one of most unrealiable gearboxes and doesn't provide any parts after 6 years."
theres nothing wrong with their trannies unless u race the shit out of them. any tranny out there will break if u beat on it.
i haven't seen any problems with honda trannies, except for the 99-02 accords, and honda extended their warrenty for free. i have almost 70k on mines and it still runs good.

The picture looks good to me for a 20k car. But I would like to see the car in person and check it out

What kind of tires the car is wearing makes a difference on the slalom test. I think Car and Driver recently did a test on tires and they did test the tires the 330i with sports have but in non runflats. The tires didn't do very good.
What kind of tires is the Si wearing?

The 2nd gen TLs had a lot of problems with the tranny. Go read about it on the TL forums. Also the early 3rd gen TL with auto tranny has a recall. The tranny needed an oil jet installed in 2nd gear. Honda makes terrible automatics but their manuals are great. The Si only comes in manual I believe.

Not to be mean or anything, but WAY TO GENERALIZE THERE BUDDY!
Exactly which "honda" did you drive? Honda manuals are known for flawlessly smooth shifting and precise gearboxes. Oh yes, they aren't the "strongest" and most durable trannies, but they do hold up their own. Obviously they do have few grinding problems for few vehicles, but thats common for any automotive manufacturers(the "my X-gear won't go in!" syndrom). Its the Autotragics from honda that is known for faulty design(ones on the Accord especially, including oddsey or whatever the name is, prelude sportshift, CL sportshift). They did extend the tranny warranty but that wasn't enough. the new 7th generation accord autos are showing problems also. Honda can't design automatics for sh1t.

True, v6 is alot better, but honda's V6 is still known for most low-end lacking V6s in the japanese market(between the big ones).

We just bought my wife a 2-door EX version of the new Civic. It gets 30/40 mpg (city/highway). It is a pretty nice car but it is so buzzy inside with that motor revving. My wife likes it a lot (because of the gas mileage mainly) but she admits that our E90 has spoiled us from a lot of other cars. Her next car will be either a Z4, CLK, or an SLK.

Ok, ok.. I admit that.

That is true that most of trannies problems were for Accords and CL. Both 4-cylinder and V6 were affected starting from 98, but Honda admitted that only in 2000 and didn't cover 98-99 models under recall. My tranny failed at 100k and they even didn't provide any spares, just told me go to independent shop for used or rebuild it. Generally speaking I was not impressed with quality of Honda build (sound isolation, quality of interior and so on).

So, you guys can continue to rave about Honda engineering, but I'm done with this department.
