128i performance exhaust feedback

Hi There
Anyone out there mod your exhaust to the performance muffler from BMW or the Magnaflow catback. Any suggestions would be helpful. I presently have the stock 2008 128i muffler system and thinking of changing it. Did you find any power difference after the change? What difference did you like about how it sounds after the mod? or didn't like if any? Which system is better BMW performance muffler or the Magnaflow catback system. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers!

Both are equal for the power gain, which is not alot.
The magnaflow could sound better because of resonator delete.

ya, its mostly come up to personal preference. I have the magnaflow because I won it in a contest and I love it .

Both are similar price wise.(magnaflow mostly cheaper in general)
The BMW PE is more high pitched sound, which many prefer while the magnaflow is more low deep exhaust note. That being said, the magnaflow is louder then BMW PE. The BMW PE is just an axle back, while the magnaflow is a cat back.

The magnaflow should have better "power gains" because it is cat back, but who really knows, and if it is, it wouldn't be a lot much more.

Edit: Here is a video of my maganflow. I recorded it with my iPhone camera. Sounds louder in person, but you get the idea. I also only revved it to 3.5k.

and one of BMW performance

The bmwp one is also res delete, which is also why i hate the sound (bit of added rasp and unnecessary volume) of both the pe and magnaflow

Te magnaflow inthe vid above sounds like stock but a bit 'farty' and raspy (that's what a res delete does). It also is a terrible cat back because it's only 2.5" piping .. Stock is 2.5 with a small crush, it is BARELY an upgrade (so actually no more, if not less, gains than the bmwpe)

For the same money as either you could get a custom muffler, cat delete, twin 2" from the headers into a 3" or 2.75" (bit quieter) with a res , all stainless and mandrel bent, and mop the floor with both of them -_-

Why people buy these things i don't know

The one reason i am hesitant to follow my own advice is i don't want my car to sound even CLOSE to those videos, it's what's making me contemplate a laptorr seriously

My magnaflow exhaust just arrived today, and it's WAY cheaper than sites like mod bargains...

The BMP PE is inside a garage, thats really bad acoustics easily makes it sound different.

Nope for 125i and 128i its just muffler
For 135i it is resonator delete.

i really dont know why we get the short end of the stick.

I agree, custom is best.
Especially with all the used mid-pipes from 135i on sale, easy cut up job for a good shop.

What did u think of the n55 midpipes on 125i videos. Did u think it was raspy?

I have the BMW Performance exhaust, and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive my car! I got a great deal at www.getbmwparts.com, and because I picked it up in person, no sales tax or shipping. Installation took me a few hours, and I posted a DIY on here with lots of photos. It was the best mod I did on the car (well, second only to the KW coilovers) I did not go aftermarket because I wanted a sport exhaust while still under warranty. Power gain is small, a little more when combined with the performance intake, maybe 5bhp? Toque feels better too, and accelration is very nice.

BMW pe is solid choice, and no fuss about installation
I think any exhaust will make 128i sound as it should have!!

I installed BMW PE a few weeks back and I absolutely love the sound. It is a bit louder and also deeper. I am beating myself up for waiting over 3 years to do this mod.

Thanks everyone for the info. I've decided to go with the BMW performance exhaust (muffler) it seems the popular choice among the responses. Aside from doing a complete custom exhaust make over you never know what it will sound like. That could give me more grief than pleasure which I'm not prepared to find out. Cheers!!

good choice! if you find it lacking or not loud enough, then I would do the N55 midpipe swap

That would be difficult/ custom work. You need to find a way to connect to the resonator... or delete it

Do you think a local dealer would install BMW PE if I purchased it online? Does anyone have experience doing this? I have seen, as with most things, I could get a PE for much cheaper online.

You can install the PE yourself.
Can save you that hour labour charge, I put mine in myself and took about hour and a half.
