Extended warranty- how much did you pay?

I'm thinking of buying extended warranty and at this stage, the quotes I've received are $3100 for 1 year, $3900 2 years. This is from 2 different dealerships- Canterbury and Northshore.

They say there's room to move, but how much should I be paying guys? Can those of you who've taken the plunge help me out?

I've and there isn't much on actual costing. One thread yielded a costing of $3100 for 2 years.

Cheers

Thanks RaihaX. 3 years? Wow, I didn't even know that was an option. Is that a factory BMW one or a 3rd party one or dealership one?

Both dealerships said 2 years extra was maximum I got.

The car I'm looking at has rego/warranty until 24 September so I've gotta move quick!

There does seem to be some negotiating room, but I decided against $3100 for 2 years (touch wood!). It of course excludes normal wear items. Read the fine print!

I didnt renew mine because I doubt it will cost $3000 to fix anything if it goes wrong.

Dont jinx me.......

Im sure AC will charge labour within the thousands regardless of what the issue is anyway.....

But youre probably right...If wipers cost $200, a dead turbo will cost as much as a brand new 1M.

replacement turbos can be done for a lot less than $3k. I won't be taking the extended warranty, I don't see value in it. would rather bank it and spend it if something goes spang.

biggest issue with turbos is labour, find cheaper labour and you're sweet.

Brisbane BMW won't negotiate the price.

However, I called up toowoomba bmw and here are the prices I got:

$2663 for the 2 year unlimited km
$2991 for the 3 years 75,000km

The difference is the first one is "bmw" branded under written by allianz and the second one is an allianz cover (for bmw). As far as the dealer tells me, the second one doesn't have road side assist and doesn't cover some trim items but otherwise it's the same. You still go back to your dealer and they do all claims. eg. if turbo goes, both warranty will cover it.

I dare say anyone even from sydney and melbourne can call up toowoomba and get the warranty there as the guy i spoke to was very nice and offered discount without me asking, and the warranty is not dealer specific anyway.

Thanks guys. I rang up a few dealers and the cheapest I got was 25% off the $3990 retail for the 2 year unlimited one with roadside, putting it at $2900. That was BMW Sydney. The rest have yet to get back to me (I rang quite late in the day).

Canterbury quoted me $3300.

Ansch, that sounds like a good deal for the BMW Branded one (underwritten by Allianz). Which salesman did you speak to at Toowoomba? I presume anyone can ring up from any state as it's meant to be Australia wide warranty. I may do just that!

Thanks for all your replies!

The standard price for a 24 month Extended Vehicle Warranty is $3,995.00. I received a quote for 24 months for $2,981.34 without asking for a discount (the reason given was that I am a "loyal" customer.

Conclusion: don't pay over $2,982 because they offer that without a struggle!

Hi Ansch,

Just wondering where those prices were/who you spoke to? I assume it's an Australia wide cover so could purchase from anywhere. I'm in Melbourne, lowest I found was about $3100/2yrs.

I've got 3 months warranty left, and this year alone I've had the steering angle sensor go bad twice ($2k a pop out of warranty), and my car's at the dealer now with presumably a HPFP failure with long cranks and then limp mode yesterday. Not a good run, and worries me this car could be a major $$ drain.

Thanks for the info.

Hi guys,

Just to update this thread with my own info. I bought my extended warranty today (w/ 2 days to spare!) at Northshore BMW. Not sure if I got the lowest price, but there is definitely room to move from RRP of $3995. I basically kept throwing prices at different dealers, telling them to beat it and seemed to bottom out at the price below.

I opted for the BMW Factory Warranty (RRP $3995) extension rather than the Allianz equivalent, with no roadside and claim limits. The max you can get is 2 years with BMW Roadside Assist and for this, I paid $2400.80. Speak to David in Finance and he'll help you out. He told me to keep mum about the price but I'm all for sharing for the sake of others' benefit. Who knows, there may be more room to move on that price!

Some may argue it's too much for peace of mind and they're happy to wing it. I don't know the history of my car (2nd hand) so I was happy to pay for it.

Hope this helps fellas!

Cheers
