Dealer states "charge air seals" are bad????
Charge air seals? Took my car to the dealer and they are replacing the turbos due to the wastegate rattle. After looking over the car, my service advisor informed me that the "charge air seals" what he described as looking like O-rings, we're leaking and causing a boost leak and needed to be replaced. He stated the seals weren't that expensive but that labor was a 1.6 hour job. My question is, what are the charge air seals? Is this something where I can buy the parts and do it myself or should I just let them handle it for a little over $200?

It sounds to me like he is probably referring to the charge pipe o-ring. Going off memory, I'm pretty sure there was one where the charge pipe connects to the throttle body. If so, this isn't a very hard thing to replace. Budget a couple hours if you haven't ever taken the charge pipe off before.
As with anything, the first time you take things apart, it takes a little longer to figure out how the pieces actually come apart/fit together. This is assuming you have a n54 since you said turbos. I haven't ever worked on the n55. |

Symptoms are when I "get on it", sometimes I'll get the half engine light. I usually get a "fuel pump plausibility" code as well as a boost leak code. Dealer says this it's what's causing that code but idk. Does this sound right? Hell I may be looking to get a new charge pipe anyway so would that come with the seal or do I re use the stock seal when replacing the charge pipe?

chargepipes usually dont come with new o-rings, but its a simple process to replace the o-ring, just upgrade your chargepipe and replace the o-ring yourself, save yourself 200$

Sounds good. If it's the ones from the charge pipe I'll tackle it myself. If it from the pipe coming out on the other side of the FMIC then I was planning on letting them take care of it, or is that side just as simple as the charge pipe side?

I think by the charge air seals he ment from the turbo that connects to the vacum pipe. Also I heard that the o ring for the charge pipe is the same o ring as the oil filter I don't know if this is true

The oil filter o-ring is the same as the throttlebody o-ring. I had to do this for somebody that blew their charge pipe apart and lost the o-ring. It's very easy to replace.
If they are referring to the y-pipe off the turbo's...not so much...that's a bit more involved. Did they smoke test it? Fuel pump plausibility (2aaf) is a very common tuning code. If you're not tuned it may be a sign that your LPFP is getting tired. Otherwise it's a shadow code and doesn't cause any issues. If you start getting other low pressure codes with it, I'd look in to replacing your LPFP. If you're tuned, take a log and you/we can see what's going on. You can email them to me at bmw.fuelkits@gmail.com if you need help deciphering the data. Steve

I'm COBB tuned and it may in fact be a shadow code. As far as the o rings, I'm still trying to get clarification if it's the charge pipe side or the other "passenger" side. If it's the charge pipe side, I may just upgrade the charge pipe while I'm at it. If it's the other side, I may just pay the dealer to do it. Thx for the help either way.

If it takes the dealer 1.6 hours to replace a seal on the charge pipe, they must have chimpanzees running their shop.
I can fully uninstall/install a charge pipe on my N55 in about 35 minutes |
