Why settle for after market while you paid for an OEM glass? Beside fitting how about safety issue with none OEM glass ? How would feel if some one installed none BMW parts on your vehicle ?

I have original glass in my '09, but driving home from the dealer, I got hit by a rock and now have a nice crack.
My insurance company won't authorize dealer/OEM replacement because of the age/mileage of my car (more than 20K). My windshield is Pilkington, but my local glass shop has Saint-Gobain Sekurit, which they claim is the same as OEM. I've seen references that they are a "quality manufacturer" (and other references that they are better than Pilkington: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=271918). I've already contacted my insurance agent to see what my options are in the future for better OEM glass coverage. |

Have had a least 3 windshields on my 1er. When I had the insurance price the OEM vs. aftermarket glass the OEM was $5 cheaper. go figure. I have always had OEM glass.

I had mine replaced with OE glass, at the dealer, last year. (Germany) I was told them, and by an independent company that the only glass authorized by TUV here in Germany is OE. Even if it's installed by an independent glass shop like CarGlass (German safelite) it had to be OE.

TUV is similar to CE, CSA, or UL. It is just a conformity approval body. They simply certify that the product you submitted respect what you where trying to be conform to.
You need a glass with an E inside a bubble on it (EU equivalent of DOT), which mean it conform to EU car standards. Any glass from a reputable brand should have it. Some oem glasses in my audi a4 are by St-gobain sekurit, I believe they do most BMW windshield as well. The rubber gasket around the windshield does not necessarily need to be replaced if it is not dried out (unlikely on any car newer than 10 years), as it does not seal the glass itself, but only prevent dirt and ice to accumulate against the urethane seal. |
