the price of the dealership offered W&T insurance is all over the place because they use different companies to insure. due to this fact, the amount of coverage is all over the place as well. i believe most places seem to be between 600-1000 for 5 years for wheel and tire insurance.
the price of maintenance just went up considerably July 1, 2009. i believe the new price is right around 2,095 for the 1-series.

I was quoted $1,200 initially, which became $895 in about 10 seconds. I wouldn't even consider it until it was under $600.

there are probably offerings out there from dealers that can be around 600...you just won't get the type of coverage that you would be happy with. you get what you pay for. if you get cheap W&T insurance...you lose features/benefits. make sure you understand what is offered by the insurance and then evaluate if it is worth it for you.

I'm not going to get it anyway. I would have to get 4 flats and bend a wheel for it to make sense financially. Bent wheel but the tire still holds air? Sorry... SOL. I'll pass.

I'm probably going to get it. With NJ roads and our pot holes I'd rather get the warranty and if i have any problems just bring it back to the dealer. BMW wheels are expensive man.

You can get used full sets in mint condition for half the cost of the insurance policy. Seriously, unless you blow out all four tires, you'll end up paying them $1k+ for nothing. How many wheels/tires have you bent or blown in the last 4 years?

The tire/wheel protection makes a LOT of sense if you're gonna stay stock and keep the stock run-flat tires and rims. The stock run flat tires are EXPENSIVE and cost close to 500 bucks to replace (including parts and labor cost) so if you blow more than 2 tires, then it's worth it. Considering I had 2 bubbles in my tires over 1 year (okay I might have been able to avoid the bubbles, but honestly accidents happen), the stock Run Flat Tires are VERY prone to bubbles and other problems which require replacement. If you're keeping the stock RFT's and rims then it's worth it. If you're switching to non-RFT's then don't bother. But seriously if you're sticking to stock and everything that's sanctioned by BMW including tires, then get the tire warranty, because you'll save LOTS of money after the first 2 replacements in several years (which WILL happen because stock RFT's are SO prone to problems)...

Is the extended maintenance the same thing as the extended warranty? If so, can you get this anytime within your 4 year 50k mile warranty?

Nah man, extended maintenance is the oil changes/ brake replacments up to 6 years or 100K miles, I believe this can be purchased at anytime with the vehicle, as BMW has nothing to lose with selling it, but I may be wrong. Extended warranty is the warranty you can purchase after your factory warranty expires, this is different though from certified preowned warranty that BMW offers with used vehicles.

When the salesman asked my wife if she wanted the tire warranty, I interjected, 'don't do it honey, those are a scam.' "I don't know," she says, " it sounds like a good idea to me..."
End of discussion. Fast forward 18 mos, 25K miles later, just picked up the car yesterday after having the _Fifth_ tire replaced, all paid for under warranty... What was someone saying about NJ roads?

BMW REALLY needs to abandon these run flats. They won't leave you stranded, they just leave you with 5 flats over 18 months! They're clearly way too fragile and ride like hockey pucks. Mine are gone once they're worn out. I'll get the kit and probably do the premier CCA for piece of mind.

Tire protection; In my opinion is well worth it. I pay $600.00 for it.
I was not going to get it; but my salesman convince me that it was a good idea due to the price of low profile run flat tires. Less than 30 days after delivery, I pick a nail on the right rear. Tire was replaced with a brand new tire at the dealer, no questions ask. Insurance invoice was $505.00 after labor and taxes. In my opinion it almost pay by itself on the first ocurrence. |
