Major Problem they want to replace my engine--Help!!
I brought my silver 6sp 330i (E90) in to Crevier bmw in Tustin last wednesday 10/26 because I was hearing some type of bearing noise in the engine whenever I accelerate at any gear. The service specialist also told me that they have a recall on my car, something to do about the car computer- I ask her how long it would take and she said that it would take all day. At the end of the day she called me and told me that they will need to keep my car overnight and that she got me a loaner car(X3)--I did'nt mind thinking everything will be done by the following day. Well it took them all the way to Friday to finish the recall part , then started working on my engine problem. Friday, they told me that they diagnose the problem and that they had to consult a BMW Master Mechanic to find out what to do about my car and they would give me an update on Monday 10/31. I was so upset because I had the weekend scheduled to add some new toys for my baby...I just purchased a couple of Diamond amps and 2 subs, a capacitor and XM sat receiver PLus a set of new 19" Hartge wheels (Classic) and Toyo T1Rs that are ready to be mounted at the shop.
Tuesday 11/1, I get home -still driving the loaner and I finally get a the call from my service specialist. She says that they have to replace the whole engine...I said this is Crazy, my car is brand new..I have less than 2500 miles on it! Needless to say I was very devastated--I want it replace with a new car, my car will never be the same! What can I do? what are my options...I can really use some great advise that I find in this forum....Please help. |

Never be the same?!?! wtf? I'd be extremely appreciative that they're replacing the motor no questions asked. Not that long ago that the e46 m3 crowd had to fight getting charged 8-10k for new motors when it was discovered they had problems.

Take the new engine and run. Crevier has an outstanding reputation. They should treat you right. Now, if you get in an accident, even a fender bender, I agree - the car will never be the same. Been there and done that. Every time you look at the car you know it's not right. This is mechanical and not cosmetic. While annoying - should be a non-issue in the long run.

Wow this is a tough one. On one hand you are already very lucky, most dealers would have told you they can't duplicate the problem and sent you on your way. On the other hand I'd be pissed too if my car's engine needs to be replaced under 2500 miles. But legally I think BMW/dealership has 3 chances to fix a repeated problem before it qualifies to be a lemon.
Personally I'd probably get pissed, get over it and get on with life. There isn't much to do. |

I would be asking for a new car too. I just forked out $40K+, I wouldn't want a car with engine problems. Plus when you go to resell it, you have to tell the buyer it has had the engine replaced, who knows it might even show up on carfax.

Yeah, it sucks, but honestly, its much better they replace the motor, rather than mickey-mouse around with the car and THEN replace the motor. Car is going to be good as new, and replacing the motor is actually a lot less painless than it sounds; it goes pretty quick.

Oooh didn't consider carfax though. If it'd show up on that I'd be negotiating some diminished value compensation. Doubt it would though, carfax usually just shows accident damage doesn't it?

I don't think you'd be entitled to a new car for a defective tire, mirror, radiator, motor, etc. You could look at the warranty, but I think they get to decide to replace the defective part. Why is it a problem? Better a motor exchange, it seems to me, than a new head, or short block, or crankshaft in terms of the kind and extent of mechanical work involved. The warranty defines the terms on which you bought the car. You can ask for something more or different, but you're not entitled to get it.

Picture this...I've finally bought my Ultimate driving machine...i'm so excited..having a new toy is such an awesome feeling! I'm going to fix it up, trick it out --I've made lots of plans for it. Then this happens... No way I would settle for an engine replacement! --that's not what I paid for! You would'nt buy a brand new car with a replaced engine for full price--would you? No way man!....Replacing an engine is like a brain transplant...what if I get an AB-Normal instead of a Normal engine...then i'm back to the same headaches and heartaches dealing with a patch up car---that's suppose to be worry free. Crevier is a great place..I recommended it to my sister and she bought her car the next day after mine! I've had nothing but positive praise for this dealership. I guess this will be a test --I will be talking to the Sales Manager tomorrow to find out my options... only then will I know how truly good their customer service is.

I agree with Natureboy on this one Even if they replace the engine, it just wouldn't feel right What if you run into more problems when the engine is replaced? How are you going to feel then?

New engine @ few thousand miles? uhhh. I don't think so. Only a brand new e90 or a full refund will do.
