Do N55's need an oil catch can?

YES!

This is after about (really guessing here) 7,000 miles. I'd say it was about an inch and a half full of stuff. I'm surprised all this junk is in there. Get one of these everybody. http://www.burgertuning.com/BMW_335_oil_catch_can.html

That looks watery/rusty... not a good sign
+1. My occ caught minimal oil, but what it did catch was black and didn't have bits in it.

Have you guys done the PCV valve?

Rob's PCV valve FTW.

Since swapping to his valve (must have been 6+ months ago) my OCC has not caught anything more than a light film. I wish the system were not internal to the valve cover, but the RB valve is excellent.

How easy is the install?
Pretty easy. Maybe a 2-3/10 in terms if difficulty.

The OP just looks like water condensation. Not a big deal really. I seem to recall BMW went to a lot of effort with the N55 to reduce the amount of oil making it to the intake.

Agreed. You need to be a bit adventurous as the cyl6 fuel rail needs to come off for clearance to open the PCV cover. But mechanically it’s very simple, just a few odd angles you have to deal with, but every job on this motor entails that. Probably a 30-45 min job going slowly and thinking it through the first time, and it’s a one-time thing so well worth it IMO.

My OCC is redundant at this point, I may pull it off the car.

I believe so too. It was too thin to be oil IMO. Still nasty though. Not sure what the scum is though. lol. I'm not worried about it.
