Check your boot brake light cover...
Hi all,
Was unloading some groceries from the boot today and noticed that the plastic cover for the boot lid mounted brake light was cracked. I saw a few weeks ago that this wasn't an uncommon problem in the US of A, so I went and checked it then, didn't see it. So, it's happened recently. Here's a couple of pics that should illustrate where to look: I need to go in for the first time soon, so will get it replaced then. Cheers, Simon....

Mine is the same or worse. I showed it to BMW and they accused me of damaging it with a high pressure cleaner? I asked if they thought I was also responsible for the same damage to the 135 they had on the showroom floor! After they inspected their display car they checked the service recalls and BMW were aware of the cracking plastic covers and are redesigning a new part which will be replacing all the current defective covers. That was 2 months ago and I have not heard back from them.

It seems that half the people on this forum have had their third brake light cover replaced, 3 or 4 times in some cases.

Interesting, Swift135, we'll see what response I get. All I know is that I'm not paying for something that's not my fault.

yeah mine is cracked too. Not sure if it is worth a trip to the dealer to replace. They might cause more damage to the paintwork etc!!
Perhaps they can just order in the part and I will fit...is it easy to fit yourself? |

Wow that's a lot of cracked covers. Mine is ok. I am wondering if mine will crack over time...?

Mine is not broken... yet, but I do find I really need to slam the boot lid to shut it first time. Maybe this is a common thing which causes the breakage?!?! Don't know but can say that my other coupe closes without touching it once you pull down on the internal "handle"recess on the boot lid, relatively gentle by by comparison.

Apparently the cracking is caused by the screws at each end being done up too tight. I haven't noticed any crack in my car. Hopefully they have solved the problem at the factory.

After seeing this thread I checked mine. Quick inspection shows nothing. Closer look shows mine is cracked in at least three spots. One hairline very similar to SimonB's, and two others respectively on the top and bottom edges and parallel with the edges. Almost like bits are going to break off.
Anyway the car is booked in for its 3,000km service and I'll add it to the list things to be addressed.
